"Would You Like Some Company?"

(closed)

"Sam" had been waiting in the entrance to the back hall of the freeway exit truck stop for almost an hour, scoping out potential targets. Broke, hungry, abandoned, desperate, and hungry -- maybe that was already mentioned? -- she watched as patrons took seats in the café and ordered. Every time Sam got her hopes up, they were dashed.

Until finally, one patron sat, ordered, and was served ... without a traveling partner coming to sit in the booth. Sam straightened her blouse and mid-thigh length skirt -- both of which were wrinkled from her sleeping in them for three nights running -- and waited until the target patron's waitress was busy elsewhere. Then, casually, as if she was supposed to be there and wasn't a vagrant, Sam made her way inconspicuously through the crowded dining room and -- without even hesitating to ask for permission, let alone actually asking -- sat across from the woman.

"Would you like some company?" Sam asked as the woman looked to her with surprise in her face. Before the woman would answer, whether in the negative or positive, Sam continued in almost a whisper, "Please. I..."

She feared she might suddenly burst into tears if the woman sent her away, but with a deeply drawn breath and some steadying of her nerves, Sam managed to keep her eyes dry as she finished in a whisper, obviously embarrassed, "I don't have any money ... and I haven't eaten in two days."
