Age difference

The wife and I would be so screwed....so to speak.....discounting the fact that we're a same sex couple........which I'm sure is also illegal in Egypt.

Fuck them.

:D

Having "done it" in Egypt, I'll note that what's "illegal" means more in some places than in others. If you are American/Western European and pretty well healed, "illegal" has little practical application in Egypt.

I wouldn't be illegal for age or spousal reasons.

My incessant questioning, "What are you doing? Why? What do you hope to accomplish by doing it? Are you accomplishing it? Are your accomplishments doing any good?", are a crime everywhere. ;)

Oh, I don't know. Around me it would get you plaudets, at least if you did it in a more civilized manner than I do. I'm not nice about my questioning, at all.

Well, their argument is that they're doing it to prevent shady trafficking in poor young girls (i.e., that it's for the benefit of the young ladies not to get sold unwillingly into marriage to rich older men). And I'm not so sure a 17 year old could legally marry a 92 year old man in the U.S....wouldn't she have to be 18?

Do take note, they will allow it if you deposit $8k in their bank.

And note that the money has to be in the wife's name. Not too shabby for a Middle Eastern country. Not to worry, anyway, we're only 13 months apart. On the other hand, let's see. 61 - 25 is 36. Niiiiiiiice!

Marriageable age depends on the state. There are a few that allow marriage at 16 under certain circumstances.

A 17 year old could get married, with parents' consent. The law might be reasonable, but I think it should only apply if one of the persons involved is under a certain age. A 17 year old and somebody more than 43 maybe should be illegal, but a 25 year old and a 51 year old should not.

First reaction - what the fuck has it to do with the state?

Second reaction - maybe its not that bad: buying a youngster sounds like abuse, so putting a brake on that may have some merit. The 'get out' of depositing a shed-load of cash in the young bride's name also has merit: if she wants out, she's got some money to look after herself - doesn't need to go crawling for help.

On balance, it shouldn't be necessary, but in case it is, good for them!

As I said, if it involves only adults, it is nobody's business. If it involves the sale of young girls, that is WRONG. Does Egypt allow multiple marriages for men?

Whether they allow it or not, it happens a lot in the region, including in Israel where is absolutely forbidden.

Given the political climate in Egypt, I think I would laud any step forward on curbing abuse of young women. They still got FGM there and a lot of other things that are taking their time getting old.

What is 8K dollars to a man like that? They circumvent the Islamic prohibition on "fornication" by marrying the girl then divorcing her immediately after they tire of her.

Only among the Israeli Arabs? Or are some of the Jewish Israelis taking up Patriarchal ways?

Israeli law regarding marriage is religious based and prohibits:
1) Underage marriage (17 is the minimum age.)
2) Incestuous marriage
3) Multiple marriage
4) Same sex marriage

True, so far as it goes. However, Maharat stated that it happens in spite of being illegal so I was wondering among which group(s).
