Following up on a recent thread about NCAA Softball World Series, many of the college athletes are now in competition for the World Cup, the 'National Team', that will go on to compete in the Beijing Olympics next year.

For those of you eagerly awaiting NFL Pre-Season games, still a few weeks away, who don't like NASCAR, there is the World Cup, Little League World Series and the Perseid's Meteor Shower due August 12th.

Don't say I never did anything for you....

USA meets undefeated Japan in competition today, two games...should be interesting.

(Or you could just celebrate my birthday, Triple Leo of course, August 5th)

Oklahoma City---For the second consecutive night the USA Softball Women’s National Team posted a run-rule victory at the KFC World Cup of Softball. Tonight China was on the losing end of a five-inning run rule victory by the USA, which scored eight runs in the first two innings for the 8-0 win.

Just a little more detail.

I LOVE SOFTBALL - womens softball. I was on a winning team for 5 years straight, as the premium catcher and hitter. 5 for 5 always and never allowed a run or steal or EVEN bunt. Proud of that in my life as a catcer. However, we did (I played for Ontario) play some US teams and softball to us (in Ontario) meant fastball, and to the champion American team it meant "LOB BALL". We cleaned their clocks! Because of this, what kind of softball are you discussing here. Ami?

Hi Charley, for some reason, I never visualized you as an athlete, much less behind the plate, that can be rough duty.

Perhaps someone else more knowledgeable can explain the 'kind' of softball, but it is sanctioned by the NCAA and adopted into World and Olympic competition and the athletes train year round and compete all over the world.

Fastball in American lingo is baseball, there is 'slow pitch' softball, sighs, which used to be played by girls and we old folks, but modern Professional Softball is a very fast and precise game and the players are all top notch.

Good to see you again.

I recall what fastball meant to those Kentucky chicks and they did call it fastball, but to me it was LOB BALL. We had pitchers that were at least 60 miles an hour on pitch at that age and my throw? 90 for sure, Ami. NO ONE and I mean even on bunt could match my arm on a run. No one dared steel a base with me on plate. It was a sport I loved and could have been great in, but there is no money (or wasn't) money in it for women. :(

Cool Charley. I was a catcher back in the day too, though played baseball. Played third base as well, but catching was more fun since the I was basically the "quarterback" and in on most everything. The few times I played outfield I nearly fell asleep. As an adult I was getting ready to play in one of those highly competitive fast pitch softball leagues until I blew out a knee (and ended up moving anyway).

I played in church league for years - for those who don't know, church league in the south is probably more competitve than MLB.

I played first base, and still have the scars to prove it. :D

If I could? I'd get a team together. I still have a great arm. :D

Update: Team USA 4-0.

USA remained undefeated beating Domenican Republic and then Team Japan in a doubleheader.

Team USA meets team Canada at 1pm Eastern tomorrow.

Thought it was Cloudy, but checking, it was CharleyH who played the catchers position before. Hope you had a chance to see the game against Japan as there were some fine defensive plays by the catcher.

Whole game was excellent with many fine performances.
