Where would one post for comments on a work in progress? Or is this something you would counsel with individual members on? I have a story that I am working on and would like some feedback on its progress. Thanks in advance!

Try posting it on the Story Feedback forum. There are lots of helpful folks that will be glad to give you a hand.

I wasn't sure if that was just for completed stories. I read the FAQ (at least mostly) but I was still unclear as to whether you could post partial stories that had not been approved. Thanks though, I will check it out.

For an unposted story you should try the SDC. that's where you will get guided feedback from ohter authors on a work before you post it.

If you happen to complete your story, but are still searching for first-impressions and someone who might catch something you've missed, try the Voulenteer Editor's Program or drop by the Editor's Forum. They're excellent resources.

If it's just on story/plot direction, I would try as cloudy said, and toss the story around the Story Feedback Forum or even the Story Ideas forum (I've seen whole stories take shape there). You can try the SDC too, but they prefer you're an already participating member, and will unmercifully lay into your project if they get to it (which doesn't sound fair for an unfinished work).

Good luck!

Hi JL,

The Story Discussion Circle specifically considers works in progress.

Post your name to the sticky thread called "Discusssion: Feedback."

I don't think the following is accurate, though "flawed" may have some terrible experience I'm unaware of:

We've had no complaints of 'unfairness' and certainly no cases where commenters failed to take account of an 'unfinished' or 'draft' state. See for instance the thread on carsonshepherd, who seems to feel OK about the process.

It's also inaccurate "they prefer you're an already participating member." What is accurate is "They (we) insist that you participate at least minimally, i.e., give a couple critiques along with your getting several for your one story." I.e., You can start participating at any time, and shortly there is no significant bias against you or your story.

As far as 'mercy' goes, you figure it out. If backslapping and 'cool' are what you need to hear, several forums and the general board can generate brief bits of feedback, mostly quite 'merciful.'
Others prefer frankness from experienced editors and writors.

I just meant it wasn't for those of the faint of heart. Like you said, the discussion will be frank and to the point, and you don't get any bonus points just for trying. A fragile ego (like yours truly), fares ill there. :)

I agree to an extent. You do need to shore up the ego for a trip down that gantlet. But it is exactly what the doctor ordered, every time, in my view.

I guess really the only way, (as in the rest of life), to find out is to do it. Thank you all so much. This really is a great community.
