Seeing there's a couple of "Grammar" Nazi type threads going on that are talking about typos and poor grammar in stories it got me thinking.

There are a couple of words that I cannot spell to save my life. I'm not talking a typo, but rather I literally cannot spell them(at least not as I type, if I sit back and really focus I can, sometimes)

It's as if my mind has some form of "blind spot or glitch" with them.

I was curious if anyone else had these words that drive them crazy.

MY two are

Definitely and Rhythm

And just so you know, I had to use spell check just now to correct them:eek:

I always feel totally smug when I can spell "rhythm" without spell check. That other one, I'm not even going to try to do

definitely, embarrassment, and psychology (anything with the word psyche in it)

Always get them wrong the first time around

You should be smug with the "R" word. I'm jealous.

The other one? Who the hell knows what the problem is.

I actually pride myself on my spelling and can pull off some pretty impressive words without looking them up, but those two kill me.

Wednesday used to be tough and even now when I type it I say it out loud

"Wed-nes-day"

Reminiscent and all its derivations. I see those little red squiggles every single time.

Do you find yourself defaulting to another word?

I'm like "as their bodies moved in perfect rythym rhythym r.... Harmony!!!"

No. That word's often the perfect one for what I want to say. Fortunately the spellchecks all know what I mean now and that's usually the first suggestion no matter how oddly I type it.

To and Too are my two glitches but I've definitely got rhythm down pat. Well, most of the time anyway.

I have to agree Wednessday is definately one of mine (you may spot another in there too!), there is also reciept.. infact any of the I before the E except after the C candidates... (even words that should be spaced in fact!) Thank god for spell checkers.

if ya want to give your spell checker a hernia, try typing in Texan.

I also stumble a little on the month February.

That is one that if I slow down I'll get, but if I am on the fly will usually screw up.

I can't even spell them with spellcheck.

Water levels in the reservoirs are dangerously low do to the current dr____t.

It took me two tries just now to get reseviors... reserviors... reservoirs close enough for spellcheck to give me the third correct spelling.

I don't even know where to begin filling in the other word...

There are plenty of others, but I can't remember them off the top of my head right now.

Psst. It's "due", not "do". The other word's probably drought.

One thing I absolutely hated back when I used Word was whenever I was writing a story that had strange names or terms.

For instance, in one story, I had a woman who was a witch-healer and everybody called her the Spaewife. The first time I typed that in, Word corrected me, and told me that the woman who lived by the sea was actually called the 'spay white'

That happened all the time when I had Word, whenever I made up words or terms for my more sci-fi/fantasy series, it would have a hissy fit and replace my words with others.

Pages (for mac) doesn't autocorrect, praise the lord. It also doesn't capitalize the first letter of your sentence, which took me a little while to get used to.

I can spell, but often have a tough time typing certain words, although I'll correct them immediately after.

For something, I almost always type "someothing." I frequently mess up "rhythm," which is bad since it's in the title of my current story. I'm sure more will occur to me but that's the only thing I can think of now.

Autocorrect is easily turned off but easier yet is to add your new words to a custom dictionary in word. Solves a bunch of problems.

I agree, the only problem that I have is that I use my custom dictionary so much it is practically dyslexic!! :)

It got to the point where I had more gibberish in my dictionary then real words...

I still have to do that now, pages still has the red and green lines, and I know that I could ignore them, but they just drive me so crazy!

I once had a story rejected for spelling, but I could only find two minor spelling errors in it. Then I realized it was because I had so many of my made-up words and weird obscure names. I imagined laurel bringing up my piece and just seeing a plague of red lines and clicking right back out again.

After that, whenever I had a lot of 'wrong' words and names, I always tagged on a little note saying that they are supposed to be misspelled.

Then start you a new one. I have four. One unedited, one each for two series, and a fourth that is for general porn writing. The unedited one, I use with my mainstream writing. It keeps the porn words down right from the start. :D
