Word Combos That Show The Rot In Our Society

Last night, I was watching Elephant (2003), a Palme d'Or- and Best Director prizes-winning film at the Cannes Film Festival, by one of my favourite filmmakers, Gus Van Sant, that I have the habit of returning to again and again, just like the other works in the filmography of Gus.

And, one thing about its subject matter struck me: school shooting.

That's what it's about--inspired from the Columbine Massacre, one of the most infamous and deadliest school shooting tragedies in U.S. history.

It was those two words though -- school shooting -- precisely the combination of those two words existing together, that struck me; the utter depravity, senselessness, heartbreak and rot which are sadly reflected by the sheer coming together of those two words--giving rise to an abhorrent thought/idea/notion that should have been incompatible and non-existent in a kinder, empathetic, loving, ideal world.

Schools should be a place for learning, knowledge, kindness, empathy, wisdom, creativity, imagination -- a place and time that should reflect everyone's golden years in life.

And, yet, we are living in a world where those two words, for many complex reasons, have come to exist in a -- I hate to say -- routine, regular, and normalized way.

It made me think: what other combination of words depict the rot in our present human society/condition?

For the sake and simplicity of discussion, let's:
  • limit the combination to consist of only 2 or 3 (maximum) words.
  • have a combination that only represents the problems, the negatives, the wrongs of our human situation; we are not looking for positive combinations.
  • have the words which, as they have come to be used together, show the real-world problems and not anything imagined or fictional.
  • have the words depict present problems and not historical ones.
The idea is simply to stir our creative, observant, thoughtful minds to bring to notice the real-world combination of 2-3 words, representing a problematic notion, which, in an ideal world, should not have existed and been entirely incompatible.

My humble request to all: kindly let everyone have their contributions and discuss on them respectfully. The contributions might touch upon contentious themes/areas (like political, for instance). Let's not bicker or be unkind with each other.
