"Mother was wrong!" Alice laughs spinning around in a circle. Her eyes closed and fingers reached out she continues to spin enjoying the small moment of freedom. She comes to a quick stop and opens her eyes again just to make sure she isn't dreaming.
She had moved to New York months ago wanting to preform on the big stages. To get noticed and to explore the world. She had grown up being a nobody. She developed late but each year got prettier and prettier.
The second she had turned 18 she had ditched home and gone where she wanted. She had been working at a temp agency for a few weeks now. It paid for her head shots and the cute blue button down dress she had on now. Her small black kitten heels made an absurd amount of noise as she skipped around the stage.
Her mother had told her she'd fail. That she would have her dreams crushed and crawl back broken or knocked up. Neither had happened so far. It helped that she was utterly naïve when it came to the opposite gender and completely stubborn when it came to her dreams.
"Oh I cant wait to tell Dinah!" Alice shrieked for joy covering her mouth as she took in the entire seen. Dinah was her roommate. A catty woman who had a soft spot for Alice. She teased Alice about her southern drawl and silly dreams but made sure she had stayed safe since their chance meeting.
It had been Dinah that had gotten her this chance. Alice's mother would have called Dinah a "hooker" but Dinah preferred "Lady of the night." Alice would spend hours enthralled by Dinah's stories. Alice was what Dinah called "Vanilla."
A few nights back Dinah started talking about her client when she mentioned Wonderland. Alice had spent hours listening to Dinah talk about her crazy suitor that boasted all about Wonderland. How he had a free pass to come and go as he pleased.
Dinah couldn't have known how badly Alice wanted to get in to Wonderland. She had been waitressing the first time she heard about it. Two men dressed to the nines stumbling into her diner talking about the wild scenes they had seen.
They began speaking in ways she didn't understand. "Smiles with out faces my friends." "There's no use in us going back to yesterday we were different people then." It sounded as foreigner to her as Shakespeare had. An image began to form in her mind she couldn't get rid of.
Alice knew she had to go there. That if she could just act on that stage all of her dreams could come true. No one would ever over look her again. She would be the center of attention and she'd be taken to places she hadn't even imagined.
When Dinah had finished talking about her client "Mr. Hatter" and Wonderland there was nothing that could stop Alice. Mr Hatter had given Dinah a card. He told her to bring it to Wonderland and it would get her in.
The thing was, Dinah had shown up and there wasn't a soul in site. She tossed the card and Alice had nabbed it up. She had spent every last penny she had on this night. She got her hair done at the place Dinah went. It was naturally plantinum blonde and now it was straight and silky down to her waist. Her shoes cost twice as much as her dress but she had seen this dress and couldn't pass it up.
She had to wear the white stockings and gloves because it was so cold and she couldn't afford a jacket. She had just enough money left to get a black ribbon to wrap around her waste and small one to tie her hair up.
It had taken her hours to find Wonderland. Everyone she asked sent her in a different direction and every time she found a sign for it she swore it would disappear. Once she found it she had been dismayed to see once again there was no one there.
She had sat down and had a good cry when she thought all had been lost. After a few minutes she'd pulled out the card Mr Hatter had given Dinah wondering if there had been a time. There was one simple thing written "Who are you?"
The second she said it out loud a light had flashed in the alley next to the building. Her curiosity got the better of her and she had went around back. There was a small hole in the fence behind the establishment. Alice is small, just a size two, but her breast are large. One button tore off the top of her dress but she sucked it in and managed to wiggle her way through the crack.
The building was empty but the stage was lit up and the decorations were breath taking. Alice had run up and down the stage too excited to even try and find anyone else. There were flowers three times her size, paper Mache butterflies floated around the stage like magic and the lighting would slowly dim on and off with different colors.
Alice did another spin then stopped cold. A tree was suddenly right before her. "How curious." Alice rubbed her crystal blue eyes and blinked thinking she was seeing things. The tree was huge and it looked as if it was growing right out of the stage.
She circled the tree and came across a stage door in the floor resting between the roots. "You should knock." A voice echoed around the stage making Alice jump. She suddenly remembered that she was trespassing and technically she wasn't the one that had been invited.
"I'm ever so sorry! I have a card!" She held her hand up but the card was gone. "I swear I did! I promise I didn't mean any harm." Her southern drawl was picking up as she spoke nervously looking about.
"You should knock." Again the voice echoing made Alice shake. Alice suddenly felt like she was very lost and had bitten off more then she could choose.
"Is that you Mr. Hatter? Dinah told me about you." Alice took a stab in the dark hoping that the person would appear and make her feel more at ease.
" YOU. SHOULD. KNOCK."
The words were deafening and actually slightly annoying. Alice huffed and dusted off her skirt. "Fine! Don't need to be telling me twice!" She moved quickly before her nerves left her. The roots were in the way so she had to partially lean on the tree to reach the trap door. She stretched and knocked three times as hard as she could.
