In the future humanity heads out into the stars…but by the time we get there we find out we took so long that most other aliens in the galaxy have staked their claims and humanity is seen as a bunch of really backwards humanoids with nothing to offer. A lot of humanity decides to just head back to their solar system and enjoy that but some humans still try and make a go of it.

We have to have some skill or value, right?

Leading to our story: MC is a woman who wants to still be out there but most aliens just don’t see anything they could use her for.

She’s then approached by some researchers: humanity has some interesting genetics and in lab conditions they’ve managed to create hybrids with a number of alien races. However, those are lab conditions. If need be, they can jam a sperm cell in an egg and give it whatever proteins it needs to work.

What they’re interested in is seeing if making a zygote is possible under normal conditions. Woman is a little shocked but this is her first real in with an alien species and they are offering to make her a full part of the team.

So she volunteers and signs up for what she thinks is 1.00 times. She has her first breeding session and after about a week they confirm the zygote, extract it and ask her about her experience as well as give her anthropological information.

She thanks them and tells them she looks forward to going over the data later…which confuses them. After all she signed up to be bred by 100 different species. Turns out there was a bit of dust on her monitor.

Edit: so the story would be a collection of her learning how to fuck 100 species or possibly more as some might have difficulty doing so.

If I may... A little quote from my Ship's Whore series:
We came at last to a room with a private pool, where Tidtikka let his garments fall and encouraged me to do likewise. His body, like his limbs, was etched with signs of age. Revealed thus was a long, slender stalk - a penis, perhaps - that was soon submerged as the Minister eased into the water.

The air was warm and fragrant, the water more so. It was bliss indeed. "Why are you so curious about me?" I asked, moving close to him. "The dress... The invite... I'm deeply grateful, of course." I wrapped my fingers lightly about the stalk.

"If pleasure is your business, you will not lack for clients, and I wished to be first."
All of which to say: Ask yourself what the real story is. Is your woman a space explorer, or is she just an unwilling breeding machine?

Not to be a contrarian, just as fun aside, there's been calculations based on our current understanding of star ages etc, that we may very well be within the first 5% intelligent beings of the galaxy (and universe). That doesn't however that we can't run into 100 elder races there for a billion years already, and it only takes few hundred million years to span the galaxy even in sub-light speeds... only those will have to be the first 1% species.

It is a longstanding tradition in science fiction to basically ignore the Fermi paradox, so I can't see why we couldn't continue it here :)

I’ll make a seperate thread for a Fermi paradox inclined setting but I like the sci-fi trope of humanity finding out it’s an infant in the universe.

Having become a fan of the HFY Death World trope... Earth is classified as an unusually high end Class 12 DeathWorld. Which, according the the galactic classification system, it's impossible for sentient life to exist -
  • 12: These planets possess ALL of the factors that make class 10 planets dangerous, usually meaning that there is nowhere on the planet that cannot kill even the most shrewd and experienced alien survivalist. Class 12 planets are high-gravity worlds, seething disease pits, menageries of death where even small and apparently benign creatures can do considerable harm, and worse. As such they are given a wide berth by all intelligent beings. Earth is a Class 12 temperate planet.
An aside. There's only one Class 13 in the HFY universe - the only human to get sent there had explained that once you figured it out - Earth was more dangerous. This is one answer to Fermi's Paradox - humans are just too damned dangerous to have around. There is a fun bit where some members of the premier Galactic apex predators decide to crash a hockey match. Did not go well for the baddies. The opposite is ....hush.... they are listening... this is your only warning... Humans are out there - almost always by accident - some 'go native', some don't. Almost all find it really hard to reintegrate if they get a ride back 'home'.
