A woman whose marriage was in choppy seas now stands accused in the death of her spouse, whose body was found wrapped and bound aboard their boat named the Screw U 2, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.
Denise Bozarth, 39, was arrested in Walton County in Florida’s Panhandle and will be returned to South Florida to face the charges, the Sheriff’s Office said.
In July 2007, Key Largo resident Edward Bozarth, 62, was found dead on board the couple’s boat, which was docked at Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo. The body was found after a person working on a nearby vessel complained of an overwhelming odor coming from the Screw U 2.
Bozarth had lived aboard the 36-foot cabin cruiser with his wife of nine years and their two children. Authorities found his body in the starboard engine compartment, wrapped in a canvas sail storage bag. His head, which had significant traumatic injuries, had been covered with a towel. The air conditioners on the vessel had been set to 60 degrees, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Authorities estimated that he had been dead for about a week. An autopsy later determined that he had died of blunt force trauma to his head.
According to information released by the Sheriff’s Office, a short time before her husband’s death, Denise Bozarth had asked him for a separation. Her parents picked up their children and took them to Defuniak Springs that June. One week later, Denise Bozarth left Key Largo to join her children in the Panhandle.
She told investigators that was the last time she had seen her husband alive.
