LOL. Nah. The gweilo's. With a knife and lifting the cash. LOL. Funnily enough, it's not the insult you think it is. Back then, that was often the only recourse for a lot of girls and women, and in cities like Shanghai (and Hanoi / Saigon) a fairly large percentage of the female population worked in the brothels or elsewhere. Sad fact of life and history, and a byproduct of poverty and the low status of women in traditional Asian societies. You still see this reflected in the Japanese porn industry, and in places like Bangkok. It's rather sad.

And all else aside, not to far from the truth. I have a dash of French ancestry. One of my great-grandmothers on my mom's (the Vietnamese-Chinese side) was the daughter of the Vietnamese mistress of some French dude back in the good old colonial days. From the one photo we have that survived, she sure didn't work the coolie quarter. LOL
