Ah, please be safe, Kerker Meister.

I will keep you and yours in my thoughts. Come back when you can!

*hugs you tight* Please be as safe as you can be, and take care of you and yours.

We'll be looking for you, here.

Hope you all come through this OK and without any downside apart from the disruption to your daily life right now. :rose:

Convince them otherwise. They aren't kidding about this one. Unless they still swim well, please use all your powers of persuasion to change their mind. I don't know how south in LA you are but I would suggest you begin moving supplies up to the attic. Sending you vibes of safety and peace. Hang on tight! I hope I'm being a worrywort for nothing!

well he had better come back here as soon as all is well to let us know he is ok or...or....he is gonna get a spankin' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i for one don't think your advice of caution is an over reaction. They are expecting this hurricane to be one of the biggest of all time. Hopefully, all who should, will heed the advice to evacuate.

This scares me greatly.

*HUGS*

PS Relatives are a pain but can't you just pick them up and plunk em in the car?
Just an idea.

I'll keep you and yours in my thoughts, though they may be preoccpied as the eye hits here about 8-10 hours after N.O.

We're just gonna get rain here but Mr. Mustache Man please keep your neck above water!!! And look at this as an opportunity for some hot hotel loving - even if it's just wanking off to bad hotel porn... lol.

And I hope your dresser drawers don't get filled with mud. And that everyone you love is safe. And that you can return to work soon. And that you stay safe on the roads.

I don't expect to hear from him for a few weeks as they re-establish power and phone lines in the area. That is unless he managed to get his family away from New Orleans.

Yes, although Katrina took a zig to the east and that made New Orleans a little less of a swimming pool, I don't think there will be a lot of electricity going round for maybe a month.

It would be nice to hear sooner.

... and

Sprint and others have reported main hubs ( i think that was the term) having been knocked out of commission. Many have lost cell phone access/service as well.

News reports figure they will get power supplied on a block by block, house to house basis.
It will definitely be weeks, with estimated times, at the moment, being at around 6-8 weeks for many.

This has happened here, 6 hours north of New Orleans. My Sprint cell hasn't worked since before noon yesterday. What's the use of having a cell for an emergency, if you can't use it to tell people you are ok?

My heart goes out to him and the others closer to the coast.

My thoughts and prayers are with the kinky kerker_miester and his family, along with the millions of othes affected by the storm.

Safe journeys and a swift return to home and normalcy.

Cell phones need their communication towers, just like electricity needs power lines. In a storm like this, these towers are blown down by the strong winds.

Satellite phones would work after this type of disaster, but who can afford one of those? Those are still pretty expensive, I think. But, they don't need anything other than the phone itself and a link to a satellite. I don't care how damaging the storm is, it isn't going to bother a satellite.

An electrical generator would be a temporary means of getting electricity on an individual basis, but that would require gasoline to run it, and after such a storm, the availability of that could be difficult.

After such a disaster, it takes a lot of time to get the utilities back up and running. Before they can get the lines and towers up again, they need to get the water pumped out of the area and any debris out of the way, first. It’s a slow job.

I know electrical trucks have gone down there from my area, as I'm sure they have from other areas in many parts of the country. The same thing happened when we had a major ice storm a few years ago that took out large portions of our electrical lines. Electrical companies from the southern states sent trucks up here to help restore our power as quickly as possible.

It's a way to return the favor for when we needed it, back then. And, the next time we have a major ice storm, I’m sure the trucks from the south will be coming back up again to help our electrical companies restore power.

In our case, there were areas of the city that went without power for weeks. Our storm was a major ice storm that dropped several inches of ice on our city. But Katrina didn’t visit us. It will take at least as long for any power to be restored in Louisiana and Mississippi and the sourounding areas.

As for the cell phones, new communication towers would need to be put up, and they need electricity, too. Plan on limited cell use, too. If you are on the fringes, your cell could work sooner, but in the heart of the storm area, it will obviously take longer.

Thanks DVS... I have found out that Sprint's long distance circuits from the majority of MS route through New Orleans  So..... If I want to call out, I have to go outside the Sprint digital area and roam on the analog circuits of other providers. I was able to do that earlier and managed to contact my parents so, that at least is done. Everyone else jsut has to check their e-mail to find out.

I have relatives there in New Orleans and all around it. I'm worried. For our friend here and my relatives.

Me and the kids have been praying for everyone in the hurricanes path. I wish their was more I could do. Does anyone know if anyone's accepting donations of money or things for the people down there? I have a whole bunch of clothes I'm about to get rid of, and I'd rather it go to people who need it, then have the goodwill make a profit off of it.

Seems it has been one disaster after another this year worldwide. My heart goes out to those who have been directly affected by Katrina, as well as those who have family ad friends in those regions hit who are waiting to hear everyone is hopefully OK. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. On another note, I find myself deeply saddened to hear of the hundreds who have died in Iraq today, mostly women and children....wouldn't it be nice if the world could have just one day without death, hatred, and destruction?
