WITH DAVID BOWIE

will it ever come?
like it did for you
like it did for you
I kinda heard you singing
oh, I never knew
no, I never knew
my heart skips around
when I hear the sound
I'm never alone
cause you're following me home
I'm falling in love
my walkman and me
with David Bowie
yeah
(you betcha)

with teenage medication
flowing through my veins
I can face the strain and
it's causing a sensation
that I can't explain
yeah, I can't explain
my heart skips around
when I hear the sound
I'm never alone
cause you're following me home
I'm falling in love
my walkman and me
with David Bowie
you want me to sing
I can, I can
you want me to play
I can, I can
you wanna be in a band
I can
I'll never be anything more than I was today
than I was today
(yeah)

and will it ever come?
like it did for you
like it did for you
I kinda heard you singing
oh, I never knew
no, I never knew
my heart skips around
when I hear the sound
I'm never alone
cause you're following me home
I'm falling in love
my best friend and me
with David Bowie
him and me
in a tree
i-n-g
yeah

Am I the only one who thinks that Bowie, for a "legend", has a pretty underwhelming catalog?

*raises hand*

I told Dilly that Tom Petty had more hits (and better songs as a whole) than Bowie, and he disagreed. Never did actually get around to researching it though.

Although he's a huge talent, I think Bowie made his mark more with his various onstage personas and offstage personality than by cranking out a whole bunch of hit songs.

And all of my friends who rush to his defense point out things like "Rebel, Rebel" and the stuff he wrote with Lennon but that's not what the resume should be of a guy that some folk call "the most influential guy in New Rock"

I dont... but hey... how bout Dylan?

I'm not a huge Dylan fan but Dylan the Artist I'd agree with you. Dylan the songwriter is where he counts. Dylan the Songwriter is off the charts.

But regardless, nothing Bowie did comes close to Blonde on Blonde.

let's see...off the top of my head, Bowie's hit songs...

Major tom
Pressure
Rebel, Rebel
fame
young americans
let's dance
china girl
changes
golden years
suffragette city
panic in detroit
ziggy stardust

Not bad, but certainly not in the same league as the Beatles, Zeppelin, or the Stones...or even lowly Tom Petty, IMHO.

I'm sure cheffie will tell me which ones I left out though.

:)

Ziggy stardust the album

And PC there is more and .... space oddity is the song not "Major Tom"

What have hits got to do with being influential or cool? Tom Petty's about as cool as a freshly laid elephant turd.

I think the top-5 Bowie albums are:

1) Hunky Dory
2) Scary Monsters And Super Creeps
3) Lodger
4) Low
5) Aladdin Sane

If we're going to judge a musician by hits, then Madonna and Michael Jackson would be at the top of all of our lists. Bowie's definitely a Legend, whatever that means. But as far as influence goes...I think there's a lot more, say, Ramones in modern music than Bowie. When I hear Bowie, it sounds good but dated. When I listen to the Beatles or the Ramones or even Elvis Costello, they still sound fresh. So while I think Bowie had a sound (or sounds, actually), I don't think he was especially influential on the shape of today's music. I could be wrong, though. Name a modern musician whose sound owes a lot to Bowie.

LOL

~Marilyn Manson (although he sounds more like a cross between Adam and the Ants and Depeche Mode)
~Suede
~Bauhaus
~The New York Dolls
~British punk
~British electronica
~British glam rock
~All those terrible LA Glam bands in the 80s
Even Nirvana - who covered 'The Man Who Fell To Earth'.

lol Chef he just lived down the road from where my nan lived

and yeah i guess bowie influenced glam rock and the way people change thier images ... bowie was an is the master of changing his image

musically i dont think he influenced to much because he was too unique

Where was Sorrow in that list Dilly?

And sexy girl I agree on it insomuch as thats part of being unique...

He produced Iggy and Lou Reed and others ... the brilliant fucker

Very good Grasshopper but a true master knows them all........

"The one" Bowie single they never talk about and the one that makes him blush.

The Laughing Gnome.

A few things.

Mr. Tzara- If you think Bauhaus, New York Dolls and Suede count as "modern" then you need to wake up to the changing of the decades. Also, just because Nirvana covered one of his tunes doesn't really mean they were influenced by him. Pearl Jam covered "Last Kiss" and I wouldn't say do-wop was a major influence on them

On a side issue thinking about Bowie and Nirvana I'd say that Bowie was more of an influence on the Hair metal mainstream that Nirvana broke through then he was on Nirvana.

Bowie= Stage personas and elaborate shows

Nirvana= None of the above

Dill= I know what he's realeased and I'm still underwhelmed. There's no "Rubber Soul" or "My Aim is True" classic album there and the hits he had are pretty underwhelming as songs go.

Also, Tom Petty is ten billion times cooler than Bowie could ever be.

Excuse me? Rubber Soul? *lol* No one had hits like Lennon/McCartney - take any band you're hyping, any songwriter and I can give the same response "There's no Rubber Soul" - you go that right - no one has a Rubber Soul.

Elvis Costello - My Aim is True? Love the song. But hell, its not Major Tom is it? Its not Let's Dance, either... or China Girl? I happen to love Elvis Costello btw...

So... what is your point? Just that you have better taste in music than me? Subjective, isn't it? I think I have better taste in music than you. Just as subjective.

Its meaningless to compare apples and oranges. You can say you dislike Bowie all you want and I can't and don't want to change your tastes. I think Tom Petty is pretty useless but enough people like him to make him rich.

But if you want to talk song catalogs and hits - you've got nothing to stand on. Yeah - the Beatles had more hits - they had more hits then anyone. Rubber Soul? *lol*

Elvis Costello? Love Elvis - how many cd's he got out? More hits then Bowie? Count 'em up, dude.

Well, maybe. Regardless the point remains that many people I know put Bowie in that league with the Beatles. And while some people look decent in that comparison(Zepplin or Nirvana) Bowie looks, well, sick and pale. So while I'm not doubting that Bowie has impact he is lacking in terms of being a "legend". The whole point I was trying to make about Bowie is that he is lacking as a giant figure in music, so comparisons to other giants is valid.

Also, someone who really loved Elvis Costello would know that "My Aim is True" is an album, not a song. :p
