Wish short stories was a category easy to find.

Hi. As someone trying to write erotica, I read a lot of stories for inspiration. I wish it was easier to find stories that were short though so I could learn how to write stories that aren't so wordy especially since I am just a novice.

Unfortunately Lit resists showing word counts. Presumably because fewer details means more clicks. That said, there's a "750 Word" challenge going on at the moment, where every story has to be exactly 750 words. I'm not sure how much you'd learn from that, though.

But here are a few tips based on my own experiences and writings:

Keep the background detail to a minimum. If you're writing a stroker (or "pure erotica", or whatever you want to call it: a story that's essentially just a sex scene), nobody cares about backstory or character, beyond what's immediately relevant to the scene you're going to describe. Start as close to the "inciting event" as you can, and let the reader fill in the blanks. They'll happily do that.

Likewise, keep dialogue short. Write how people speak in real life: a few words, then wait for a reaction, then a few more words. Short sentences keep the story moving forward.

Don't skimp on sensuality. After all, for a stroker the whole point is to write the hottest sex scene possible. Describe it like you're making love to your partner on a lazy Sunday morning. Explore all the senses, caress the details, build up the tension.

"Short" doesn't mean barebones. Your readers will still want to have enough description to get them hot and bothered. A plausible set-up, believable reactions and emotions from the characters, and a sex scene that lets them experience it all through your narrator's eyes.

Here are a couple of mine to see what I mean:

Angry Fuck - A Vignette (2.5k words)

Flesh for Fantasy (2.5k words)

Fun with Fingers (2.5k words)

Pas de Trois (4.6k words)

The Code (4.8k words)

Too Cold Not to Fuck (1.5k words)

Good luck!

Wow I read that story and nice job! It did what it was supposed to do The 750 word count challenge is interesting. How do I find the section that has them?
