A Milwaukee County court commissioner decided Monday that there is enough evidence to send Timothy D. Russell,
a former top aide to Gov. Scott Walker, to trial on charges he embezzled more than $25,000 from a veterans group
and two political candidates.
In 2009, Walker put Heritage Guard in charge of Operation Freedom's finances. He made the move after his then-chief of staff
went to prosecutors with concerns over a local chapter of Purple Heart and its handling of Operation Freedom's books.
Prosecutors have charged Kevin Kavanaugh, finance director of a Milwaukee chapter of Purple Heart, with five felony counts
on accusations he embezzled $42,000 that had been raised for Operation Freedom.
Also taking the stand at the preliminary hearing was Chris Kujawa, an unsuccessful candidate for the County Board in 2007.
Kujawa said Russell's domestic partner, Brian Pierick, was the treasurer for his campaign account, but he dealt mostly
with Russell on financial matters. The former candidate said he had no idea that Russell had taken $3,000 from
the campaign fund - the same amount Kujawa lent his campaign.
Embezzlement probe also results in sex charges
The secret John Doe investigation into embezzlement of funds intended for veterans also produced a jarring
unrelated sex crime case against the domestic partner of a former top aide to Gov. Scott Walker.
Pierick appeared in court Thursday in Waukesha. His bail was set at $2,500 cash and a $7,500 signature bond.

Gov. Scott Walker is raking in money at a pace not seen before in Wisconsin politics as he prepares to face the state's
first-ever gubernatorial recall, taking in more than $4.5 million over five weeks.
In just over a year, Walker has raised more than $12 million in campaign donations - more than he spent to win
the seat in 2010 - and despite sizable spending in recent weeks still has $2.6 million in cash in the bank, according
to figures released Monday by his campaign.
