I always like to watch the Opening Ceremonies at least. Very tribal--everyone all dressed up in their special outfits and waving their flags. Some story is presented in dance, the Olympic flag goes up, the torch gets lit. All very primal but with digital cameras and iphones. And on a global scale

Other than that...I'll probably watch the snowboarders. They always seem to be having a great time and they never take it too seriously. (Go Flying Tomato! You rawk dude!) And on the opposite side, I'll likely watch figure skating where no one seem to be having a good time and everyone takes it waaaay too seriously. Even though they're all wearing sequins.

Anyway. Here's the official, Winter Olympics Thread for anyone who wants to discuss what they're watching over the next two weeks.

Umm. A Quarter Pounder with Cheese?

(I think all critters like that are lame.)

Watching and crying...as is usual for the opening ceremonies for me.

The Georgia team was trying not to cry in light of what's happened to their team. I don't usually shed tears during the March of Nations except for when the U.S. team comes out, but I shed tears for them today.

I'll watch the figure skating, skiing, maybe snowboarding, and any curling I can see. Yes...I said curling. That sport is positively hypnotic.

Ah...here I go. The tears once again fall as the U.S. enters the arena. And I cry for Canada now too. Usually cry for the host country when they come in...I'm such a sap.

I love all of the pomp and circumstance. The mounties made me cry. Everyone looks so proud to carry their nation's flag. It's a great thing! And, the "Indians" (forgive me), were very impressive. Nice job Canada!

I love the Olympics.

Red is ADHD and his smart parents channeled his energy and thrill seeking into sports instead of letting him try to jump his bicycle from his roof to his neighbors. Dude is pro level in snowboard and skateboard. Wonder if he gets any.

3, have you seen First Descent? White and other pros, young, old, female, hit the slopes and grandpa sees "the future is now old man." Great documentary, but I'm a sucker for docs.

Can't wait for ice fishing!

Have not! And I love docs, too. I'll have to look for it.

Damn late feed for me (Why, NBC? Why?).

Canada has really done itself proud. It was a great opening ceremony. Mounted Police were very grand. And I was very moved by the host nations standing and speaking for all of Canada and welcoming the athletes. The ice totems were awesome, the native dress of each was simply amazing. And did you notice the one really old woman who stood with one of the chefs during the blessing? She was cool!

The black armbands so many athletes were wearing in honor of the lost Georgian and in solidarity of with that team was also moving.

The parade of nations is certainly a good geography lesson, ain't it?

Where can I get one of the U.S.A. moose hats? I love 'em! Also the Canadian red-checkered scarves. :cattail:

Ahem! I'd like to point out that the giant bear in the opening ceremonies was posed for by cousin Olaf.

All the 60's music is making me very nostalgic.
The 60's "Both Sides Now" was picked because it's by Joni Mitchell (who evidently sung it?), a Canadian.

Awesome what the technology allowed the to do with the floor of the stadium. I especially adored the whales and the tap-dancing segment. The tap dancers were both amazing and felt genuine. Like they were really doing their thing, not just a stage show.

Curling! Yes, Curling. I thought I was the only one who enjoyed watching it. I don't know squat about it, but it's facinating and I wish I did. :D

Can anyone give me a quick course in curling? What does the sweeping do, melt the ice to make it slicker?

And the figure skaters. Damn, they are amazing. What athletes!

Great idea to post an Olympic Thread. Thanks, 3113!

I like Quatchi best. A bear with ear muffs. :) Or did someone tell him a dirty joke and he tries to hide his red ears? :D

I'll watch many events I hope, but I look especially forward towards Biathlon, Nordic Combination and Curling. You are not alone in the last one, Katyusha! :) If our team for a chance plays at least mediocre I'll watch icehockey also.

Being in Canada this time you know its a dead-ringer for the Special Olympics. So, no I'm not watching.

Yes, I have curled only a few times myself but, sweeping makes the rock travel faster and further..not sweeping slows it down. The skip gages the throw of the rock and screams out directions to the sweepers. The screaming is fun. "Sweeeeeeeep! Sweeeeep!" lol

The one lit up like a Christmas Tree? What sort of spirits did Olaf typically imbibe?

Olaf is a kind of a odd sort. Our branch of the family doesn't have a lot to do with him. It's not that he's unpleasant but back in the dark of his den he has this mushroom patch? And he's never told anyone what species it is? And he rarely comes out!

I don't know how in the world the Olympic Committee even made contact with him. Maybe it was one of the local shamans. They know about mushrooms, don't they?
