Winter Night - A revealing conversation

I rather like the story "Winter Night" in the fantasy section. Don't recommend it unless you have a thing for incest. Well written, though, I think. And unique: I've never read a fantasy story with a brother-sister relationship of that sort. I particularly liked how the author created a rather complex and suble world in a very short story.

Infact, I thought it might be interesting to write a little conversation blib of my own as a discontinuous segment of the story. Its not erotic - my aim was to match as closely as possible the feel of the world. I have, however, consciously altered the character of Paul's mother as described by the original author.

Paul stalked out of the room in frustration. He decided to go for a walk. As he passed by the living room, he noticed his mother sitting in a rocking chair next to the fire with her back turned to him. Paul turned quickly to leave. He didn’t want her to ask questions.

“Paul.” Aurora called.

Not quick enough, apparently. His mother remained faced away from him.

“Yes, mother?” Paul responded, careful to keep his voice neutral.

“Come over to the fire.” she said. He walked over warily. Aurora set aside the vest she was mending and looked at him. Even at her age, she was still beautiful. While Paul looked more like his father, he had inherited her tawny hair and golden eyes. Marks of the wolf kin.

“How is your study coming along, Paul?” she asked.

“Well enough. I’ve always rather liked philosophy.”

“Ah, so it is philosophy now? What happened to science?”

“I got bored.” Paul admitted, “It got ridiculously technical. There are terms for just about everything from the everyday to the obscure.”

“Sometimes that is necessary, Paul. You have to learn the language in order to understand the conversation. A jack of all trades... is a master in none, hmmm?”

“Yeah... I know.” They lapsed into an uncomfortable silence. He resented the way his mother made him feel like a child. And while his study was a safe topic so far, he didn't know if it would stay that way. He had to leave. She was simply too perceptive. “Listen, mum, I was just about to go outside for a walk, is that ok?”

“Of course, dear.” said Aurora, picking up the vest and resuming her mending. Paul turned to leave.

“Paul?” He stopped.

“Yes, mother?”

“How are you and Adriana these days?”

It was mildly put, but Paul felt shockwaves run through his spine. “Relationship?” he replied wittily.

“Yes.”

He decided to temporize. “It’s going ok, I guess.”

“Did you use protection?” She continued.

So much for temporizing. “What?!” cried Paul in a strangled voice, turning around quickly.

Finally, Aurora looked up from her sewing. Her gaze was steady. “I asked if you used protection. This is important, Paul. I don’t particularly care to see Adriana pregnant right now, do you? She IS my daughter, after all.”

Paul felt as though his body was falling into a pit. He checked to see that no one else was nearby before approaching his mother. “How did you know?” he asked in a low voice.

“You two were telling me with your bodies in a thousand little ways. Puppies do it all the time. I admit, Adriana was easier to read than you." She paused, her eyes never wavering. "I’m still waiting, Paul.”

“Not the first time…It just…happened… we did, the other times.” Paul kneeled, his ears laid back and his eyes pleading. “I swear, it wasn’t my idea! Adriana…she –“

“Yes, Adriana was the aggressor. I know.” said Aurora bluntly, “She’s always been very impulsive. She’s governed entirely by her emotions. Which is why, Paul, the responsibility for all this lies with YOU. Looking after Adriana is YOUR responsibility now. As much as you might care for your sister, you mustn’t let your instincts override your common sense.”

Paul hunched over dejectedly. “Mom, I’ve tried to stop! I really have…its just –”

“Stop whining!” Her voice cracked like a whip. “You will NOT go around with your tail between your legs over this!” Paul bit his lip.

She continued more gently, “I am not suggesting that you and Adriana stop what you are doing. In fact, I believe trying to do so would not only be unsuccessful, but also be detrimental to your relationship. When a woman decides on a mate, she’ll fight fang and claw to keep him. What I suggesting is that you take some precautionary steps with relations to Adriana. I’ve noticed, Paul, your preference for a lasse-faire relationship with your sister. That has to change now. Adriana isn’t going to set the rules. She expects YOU to do that. Do you understand?”

He frowned, thinking for a moment. “Yeah, I think so.” He hesitated. “Have you talked to her yet?”

“No, not yet. I wanted to speak to you first. But I will later today.”

Paul took a large breath and let it out slowly. “This is going to be difficult.”

“Oh, my dear, we can’t always choose who we love. That’s why it’s never simple. You and Adriana will just have to trust each other.” Aurora touched his cheek fondly. “Love of this sort is hardly unheard of. However, I wouldn’t count of your father being friendly to the idea.”

“Will you tell him?” asked Paul, dreading the response.

“Your father? Of course not. I’m not a teller of tales, Paul.” she said.

“Yeah… ok.” He sighed with relief and got up.

“Take care of yourself, dear.” she said, returning to her sewing.

“I’ll try.” He paused, looking at Aurora. “Thank you, mother.”

“You’re welcome.”

Paul spent the next few hours thinking over his conversation with his mother and what he had to do now.

A week later, in the heat of lovemaking, Adriana ripped the condom from his shaft, leaving only little shreds of rubber. Apparently Aurora had put her on the pill.
