Winona Ryder Arrested for Drugs, Shoplifting

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Actress Winona Ryder was arrested for illegal drug possession and shoplifting clothing from a Saks Fifth Avenue boutique, police said Thursday.

Security guards at the Wilshire Boulevard store detained the 30-year-old Wednesday after discovering her trying to steal hair accessories and "numerous items of clothing" valued at $4,760, Lt. Gary Gilmond said.

Police arrested her and later found she was carrying narcotics, he said. She was booked on charges of grand theft and possessing pharmaceutical drugs without a prescription. Police did not disclose the kind of drug.

Ryder's lawyer Mark Geragos denied the allegations. He said Ryder had a prescription for the painkillers and receipts for the items she allegedly stole.

"It's a misunderstanding on the part of the store," he said, adding that Ryder was carrying the items between store departments.

Gilmond said Ryder may have a prescription for the drugs but she was booked because she couldn't immediately produce it. He added that store security officers saw a surveillance video in which Ryder was allegedly removing tags from the items.

Ryder was released from custody Wednesday night after posting $20,000 bail.

Her publicist Mara Buxbaum said the actress had no immediate comment.

Ryder, the Oscar-nominated star of Little Women and The Age of Innocence is best known for playing ponderous, melancholy characters in movies such as Girl, Interrupted and Reality Bites.

Ryder has maintained a grueling film schedule and has been hospitalized several times for exhaustion. Ryder lost a pivotal role in 1990's The Godfather: Part III days before filming began because of anxiety and exhaustion.

She has told reporters she sometimes tried to drown her anxiety attacks and depression in alcohol.

I have little sympathy, she's annoying and she can't act. Maybe prison will help her thesbian/lesbian skills, and a movie that costs $7.00 with her in it will actually be worth it for once.

Mostly I would agree - except she was in 2 GREAT movies (not necessarily because of her)... Girl, Interupted and Edward Scizzorhands...

And she's hot... I'd do her.

I'm not the WAITING in line type... I'd fuck my way through them, then do Wynona. We can race to see who gets to Wynona first.

How does a store make a "mistake" about five grand worth of merchandice?

It usually doesn't, but if it did, it will have one fuck of a lawsuit on its hands.

Who carries their prescription around with their medication? Is this something I need to start doing?

Mischka,

I'm sure what they mean is that the pills were not in their original prescription bottle or they were in somebody else's name.

The pharmacist keeps the prescription anyway.

Annoying? She always seamed fairly pleasent to me. I always thought she was a good actress too. Subtle, didn't have to resort to screaming or other big displays to get her emotions across. She's been making some bad movies lately, though.

Just goes to show that even when you get your wish to be rich and famous it doesn't stop you from being a fucking idiot.
