Ravenel Bridge

Police estimated that 10,000 to 15,000 people gathered for the Bridge to Peace Unity Chain, an event held to promote unity and peace.

People gathered on both sides of the bridge — named after a former state lawmaker and Confederate flag supporter — and marched until they met in the middle, cheering and congratulating each other with open arms.

Respect and consideration

Instead of a parade at White Point Garden, they will mark the anniversary with a 10 a.m. service and keynote address inside St. Michael’s Church.

The anniversary of Carolina Day comes one day after the funeral service for the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, the pastor of Emanuel AME Church.

Carolina Day is normally an upbeat affair, marking the anniversary of Charleston patriots’ defeat of the Royal Navy and British Army. The battle — which took place exactly a week before the Declaration of Independence was signed — kept Charleston out of British hands for the first five years of the Revolutionary War.

“In light of the recent tragedy in Charleston, the Palmetto Society and the South Carolina Historical Society have decided to commemorate Carolina Day in a different manner this year,” said a joint statement from Charles Waring of the Palmetto Society and Faye Jensen of the S.C. Historical Society.

About 350 people packed the Whitfield Center at Charleston Southern on Monday to honor the life of Sharonda Singleton

Chris Singleton, a rising sophomore at CSU, inspired many across the country with his remarks about his mother last Thursday night, just 24 hours after she was killed during a Bible study at Emanuel AME

The crowd also prayed for all nine victims and for Tim Grant, a security officer at CSU who is a relative of two of the Emanuel AME victims.
