lol - :D - It doesn't surprise me, though, JJ.

I'm still using Windows 98. Not for long though. The new kitchen design software I bought requires XP and I'll be upgrading I guess. I wouldn't even think about using Vista until the first service pack comes out.

Guess I better get that upgrade before I can't anymore.

I keep thinking of switching to Linux. I've used Unix before. It seems more like a real OS than Windows or what I've seen on a Mac. Trouble is, few people know how to use it. Everyone knows Windows or the Mac stuff.

The only person that matters is you.... if you can use it then do so...

I've switched over to Linux the last few years... I have a copy of XP on a removable Hard drive with my games, word and a few other programs on it.... that's all it's used for, everything else is Linux.....

I write in Open Office and it's directly convertible and easily read by Word as Word is directly compatible with Open office.... The best of both worlds....

So as far as Vista goes... who cares.....

Windows 98SE

LOL. So am I! (I'm Win98SE).

I remember being first, astonished, and then, disgusted by the damn lemmings who went out and bought Win95. That was the worst piece of crap I've ever seen; I still don't believe MS got away with selling that garbage. Unfortunately, the success of Win95 was what enabled MS's monopoly. I have to admit they did get a little better after that. Excel is a nice program. I don't have anything nice to say about Word, though.

If I switch, then the whole company switches. No mixed platforms this guy.

Why do people still race out to get the new Windows OS when it first comes out? They've been buggy and basically betas ever since 98.

I've been advising people to try Knoppix for years. One CD, stick it in any Intel PC, reboot, and you've got a working, user friendly, Linux system. Autodetects pretty much any hardware, accurately. It runs entirely off CD, so it doesn't do any harm to the underlying system, whatever that is. Obviously, running off CD, it's a little slow, but if you decide you like it you can install it to your hard disk and then it performs very well.

I've recently been playing with Kubuntu, and while I'm still evaluating it my initial impression is still more favourable. For a non-geek's introduction to Linux, it's about as slick and user friendly as it's possible to get. Again, runs off CD, but is exceedingly easy to install to your hard disk, with a nice pointy clicky installer tool to help you.

Obviously, installing any new operating system to your hard disk will over-write whatever other operating system was previously in that partition, so don't do this until you're sure you like it. But with distributions like these, anyone who can use a Mac can use Linux.

Dude, go Mac. It runs BOTH Mac software and Windows. I *think* it even runs Vista

Vista

Why is anyone surprised by this.

OS X - Unix - awesome

It mystifies me that people pay for software. Open source software has arrived. I would be very surprised to learn that Literotica is not running Apache.

Apache/1.3.37 Server at forum.literotica.com Port 81

Unfortunately, from what I can tell, it is being run with M$ as the OS.

Because as far as Operating Systems are concerned, the open source movement still seems heavily justified towards needing an aptitude for programming to be able to use the system the way an MS (after SP2) or Mac OS runs out of the box.

I don't want to have to go through every little detail to get my machine working. I just want to buy the OS and have it set itself up to my machine. I'm lazy and inadequate that way.

Now see, that doesn't really matter to me...I don't play games...at least not that kind anyways...

I wouldn't have Vista just cuz I hear it's a piece of shit. I remember when Windows 95 came out. I was responsible for all the upgrades in my research group...and we "JUST" had to have it the day it came out.

What a fucking nightmare.

gee dont you guys look and listen!

You want a you beaut brand new system that will burn power, well get Vista!
