Has anybody installed SP2 and had any problems? Installed it on the wifes desktop and after re-booting, it won't boot-up, the thing says a file is missing or corrupt. Its 'Windows root>\system32\ hal.dll.'

I don't have my XP disc with me, and I can't find that file on my laptop to copy to hers.

Help!

Speaking of which, being that you're a computer geek, should I or shouldn't I install it?

I've heard loads of people are having problems with it, and I'd rather not have to re-install my HD.

Thoughts, moans, tickles?

If you have good antivirus and use a router with a built in firewall, then no, I wouldnt install it.

The built in firewall is too strict. Especially if you like to connect to the internet. :)

You can install it and disable the firewall part. That would probably be the best option.

Also, make sure your antivirus is acceptable to microsoft. Nortons has a fix if you use it.

Ummm........I have a router with no built-in firewall. For that, your man told me to use ZoneAlarm, which I do.

I hate the fucking internet. All I do is pay bills on it and get trolled.

I have Norton. Will go on the website to find the fix.

Danke.

I disagree with his use of ZA, and he knows it. :)

Wrassle for control over my firewall then.

I'm imagining a big kiddie pool filled with jell-o and boobies galore.

Yours, not his.

The leadership (aka political admin types who mainly know only computer buzz words) are trying to force us all to install XP-SP2. I can't wait for the hissy fit when I tell them I'm still running W2Kpro.

I would definately stay away from XP-SP2 at this point. There is apparently a list on the M$ site of the non-M$ programs which break when SP2 is installed. The boss tried it on his laptop, and got the first bluescreen he has ever gotten from XP once he rebooted and tried to run apps.

As far as missing files, the SP2 install apparently has issues about completing. Since I am doing my best to avoid it, I don't know exactly how, but apparently, there are points where you have to answer questions while or after it has installed most of the service pack. If you skip and tell it to end, you don't get the whole service pack installed. In some cases, the machine will not even boot afterwards.

Sounds like fun.

You should contact your internet provider as well as your firewall manufacturer for any updates that they may have. If someone suggested that already then I apologize, I didn't read the entire thread.

Wont do any good if they cant boot up.

I believe you can get the updates before you install Service Pack 2. With XP you can also do a system recovery if you have any problems.

Only if they have it on. Most dont. And there is a difference between home and pro. The easiest thing is to replace the file that was corrupted.

Or have more than one computer to fall back on :)

There is a reason I have 6 computers in my office :D

One would hope you wouldnt do anything stupid enough to need a backup. :D

I have more than one computer at home, multiples at work, but I rarely use more than my laptop.

Thanks all! Downloaded the file to my laptop and copied it to disc, but I can't get the desktop to boot even into safe mode or anything to copy the file there.

If you can't help me, then you'll have to give me hot nasty sex (or any kind!), cause I'm damn sure not gonna get it from her if I can't fix her machine! :D

No, I don't do much to my main computer. The others are mainly for testing on so I don't break my main machine. And interesting concept my boss only recently discovered. I think that man has had to reinstall his main machine an average 4 times a year.

I think bootdisk.com has a bootable floppy image you can pull down for XP so you can at least access the hard drive to copy the file over.
