Current and former NFL players campaigning for racial equality and criminal justice reform wrote a lengthy memo to league commissioner Roger Goodell officially seeking overt league support in their effort, including an endorsement for an activism awareness month, Yahoo Sports has learned.

The 10-page memo, obtained by Yahoo Sports, was sent to Goodell and executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent in August, requesting wide-ranging involvement in their movement from the NFL. The memo seeks an investment of time and education, political involvement, finances and other commitments from the league. It also sought to have the NFL endorse the month of November as an activism awareness month, similar to the periods of league calendar dedicated to breast cancer awareness and military recognition.

I think they've actually decided, in private, to allow the players to dedicate the whole season to making asses of themselves.

This former fan no longer watches...

I usually try to avoid politics and things of that nature, but Sports, racial activists and politics have been intertwined for quite some time now, I'm almost 50 and it was going on before i was born. This isn't something new. I just wonder why people are so up in arms about it.

Because they're disrespecting the National Anthem.

They're also protesting a lot of things that simply are not true...

Because they're racist.

They can do any damn thing they want, I'm still not watching their fucking games........same as last year.

I see MUCH smaller contracts in the future. Imagine a draft pick where every team passes on the first and second rounds. *chuckle*

Yeah! Protect white america! Make the football players STAND for the national anthem... OR ELSE!

Fuck them.

They can stay in the locker room until the game is over.

Let the entire league go 0-0-16, all at scoreless ties.

Although I should find out who advertises on their fucking networks so's I can boycott them, too. I already don't drink beer-n-booze, so there's that . . . .

That's very kind of you to allow them to stay in the locker room.

Here's how free USA works, Ish... people have the right to the 1st Amendment. This is an example of this. I'm sorry that you're unamerican, and that you don't get it.

Kaepernick became terrible and as such was benched well before his kneeling protests. The media is still hyping this up for reasons unknown, ratings I guess? He probably would have been dropped regardless. I don't care if they kneel or not, but if others do, that's their prerogative.

If the four players who authored the memo are really good and popular, they can probably get a watered down version of their wish. If they suck, not so much. If it were that really hot popular guy, Odell Beckham, the NFL would probably find a way to appease him.

Probably a bad idea though, many people are tired of activism and just want to unwind on Sundays.

Those up in arms likely don't much care for racial equality and criminal justice reform. They see uppity athletes -- paid HUGE piles of money -- who just don't know their place in the natural order. Fuck, it used to be that ALL top athletes were white! And now? Shit!

They forget that dissent is patriotic and that Americans come in all colors etc.

Probably a bad idea though, many people are tired of activism and just want to unwind on Sundays.
Yeah, who wants to hear about how FUCKED UP THE SYSTEM IS when you're nursing that Saturday-night hangover. Just watch the show. That's the CIRCUS part of the old Roman Bread-n-Circus routine. Keep-em fed and entertained, and they won't notice how thoroughly they've been robbed and fucked.

It isn't up to you nor me to tell people how to spend their leisure time. And it isn't up to you nor me to tell people which current/political issue should be at the forefront of their minds.

That IS precisely the point. Sports was one of the few remaining refuges from all of the political BS that seems to have infected the media. It's pretty well known that I'm one of the more political posters here but even I get tired of the non-stop bullshit.

News reported yesterday that NFL fan participation and TV ratings are down 25%. That's huge. As stated above, pro sports have been a refuge from politics. If you want politicized sports, that's what the Olympics are for.

I have no sympathy for millionaires who play a game for a living telling the rest of America that life ain't fair. That's why I have found better ways to spend my Sundays and Monday nights. There are a many other problems with the NFL, but the "protests" are the straw that broke the camel's back.

Blue collar America is the NFLs greatest source of income. They were pushed to the limit with the cost of tickets, concessions, merchandise etc. The NFL is rapidly losing it's base. The NFL needS to fix this soon or they will not be able to sustain.

Actually, something needs to give. The average person should not have to spend a week of their salary to see one game in person. Let the NFL fail.

If you want to see the NFL fail because of overpriced tickets I agree that's a reason fans should be upset.

The ratings were likely low due to the hurricane that struck.

No it's not. It is an economic reality. When you have tremendous demand, you charge more. The additional revenue enhances the product and keeps the demand up. The common man can watch in his shorts and wife-beater with a six-pack from the comfort of his couch...

;)

... or he can support his local high school team with his presence.

Or he can binge on some Netflix shit. Commercial free, protest free.

The NFL is learning that we have options, but, like Hollywood, they still have enough demand that they can be arrogant about the huge finger they've put into our face.

-$$$$$

Just a matter of time.

"Hey Boss, our demographic research shows that the post-millienial's will be the largest purchasing group in 2030."

"No shit? What will their purchasing power be?"

"Welllllllllllllllllllllllllll, <grimace> most of them are going to be unemployed."

"Hmmm, is there a way we can invest in illegal drugs without being traced?"

Whatever.

As stated above, pro sports have been a refuge from politics.
USA pro sports have been hotly political for quite awhile. Race, sex, war, injusice, all find their way into play. Pro sports team owners are widely despised but one was installed as president a generation ago. Owners routinely blackmail local jurisdictions for tax-paid stadiums. That's political. Pay and gender issues are political. Humans are political. To escape that, get a dog.

If you aren't in that stadium when the band starts up, if you're at home watching on the big screen, you are supporting dozens of people on the field who are not respecting the National Anthem at all. They're panning the crowd, taking close-up shots, cuing up angles, watching the clock and all the other duties that go into broadcasting television. Not one of them is standing at attention or removing their headwear, because if they did they would be out of a job.

Same in the concession alley, where all those employees of the NFL need to keep an ear on the fryers and an eye on the buns. If any of them took a ninety-second break for Old Glory, they would soon be doing so on the street.

It's ridiculous to require players to do something which doesn't enhance their abilities to play the game. It would make more sense to encourage them to skip rope or do jumping jacks during the National Anthem.

I think ratings have dropped because the league is overexposed. There are way too many games on TV. Who wants to watch a game between two mismatched teams or two who totally suck?

If the NFL decides on behalf of its anti-American players to disrespect our flag and what it represents to the majority of Americans, the majority will destroy their business model by bringing economic clarity to the issue.
