begin today.

China are playing Costa Rica in the World Cup.

China has the lowest ranking of all the finalists.

An estimated half a billion Chinese will view the match.

Today is the anniversary of the 1989 Tiennemen Square uprising.

Will a win for them trigger off another pro-democracy movement?

We all await the outcome with bated breath...

Score so far China 0 Costa Rica 0...

I think you may have confused...

...China with, say, Paraguay or Cameroon. Football may have the power to topple governments and inspire massive outbreaks of mob violence in some nations, but I'd say offhand that China doesn't give a damn about it.

I've also observed that the average Chinese person seems to regard Democracy as being about as desirable as bone cancer. I reckon they have the form of government they both want and deserve, and hopes for their "emancipation" are likely to be disappointed.

If I had been asked who would have made that statement I would have answered miles or someone equally lightweight...

But not you...

<sigh> Life's full of disappointment...

The Chinese Government have installed large public screens in all major towns...

Saddam Hussein phoned President Bush and said: "George, I called you because I had this incredible dream last night. I could see all of America, and it was beautiful and on top of every building, there was a beautiful banner."
Bush asked, "What was on the banner?"

Saddam responded, "It said Allah is God, and God is Allah."

Bush said: "You know, Saddam, I'm really glad you called, because last night I had a dream too. I could see all of Baghdad, and it was even more beautiful than before the war. It had been completely rebuilt, and on every building there was also a beautiful banner."

Saddam said: "What was on the banner?"

Bush replied: "I really don't know. I don't read Hebrew"
