Will soccer be replaced as the "world sport"?

I got "moderated" on another site for suggesting that Europeans might already be starting to lose some interest in soccer (or "football"). I cited the explosive growth in interest in rugby in France, and its continuing growth in other parts of Europe, as one indication. It wasn't enough for me to be disagreed with and of course insulted and called stupid, my comment had to then be "moderated" (removed) entirely.

So, what exactly scares soccer fanatics about the mere idea that their game might someday lose its status as the dominant "world sport"? Why is dominating the world so important to them?

That's a very interesting question and I can tell it is important to you. I think it might have something to do with the commerce generated in and around professional sports, but I really couldn't say. I hope you find your answers.

Which sport is most likely to challenge soccer as the "world game."

It could be any of the following:

Rugby, Basketball, (Team) Handball, Cricket or less likely Baseball.

I don't believe that ice hockey, water polo, or lacrosse have any realistic chance of overtaking soccer in worldwide popularity.

i disagree with you.

oh, and you're stupid, too.

Many would argue that basketball is best placed to overtake soccer and perhaps they are right. However, one limitation facing the sqweeky shoes game is that people in many parts of the world tend to be of short physical stature. This also makes volleyball unlikely to take over.

The equipment required to play baseball, cricket, or horse polo, effectively rule them out as well, while ice hockey is limited by the fact that most of the world does not have natural ice. Water polo is limited by the lack of potable water in many countries.

Rugby on the other hand requires very little equipment. Its also a game for all shapes and sizes.

Nothing is going to replace soccor as the World sport. Not unless we get incredibly lucky and e-sports catch on then who knows. Whatever the first video game that shows up that people can enjoy watching even if they can't play it well.

In the first place, its not the "world sport" now. If it were there wouldn't be any other sports.

Secondly, there is nothing that soccer activists have to back up that statement. Its the same thing they said in the other site I refer to, without even any arguments to back it up. It wasn't always the biggest sport and there will come a time when it won't be the biggest again. Its inevitable, the game needs to change or die.

Soccer never changes or adapts. Why is it we're told that everything else in the world needs to constantly "adapt or die" yet soccer can plod along with virtually the same rules it had 150 years ago?

Of course it's the world sport and there will always be other sports. Besides your the one who identified it as such.

It's the biggest sport it doesn't show any signs of slowing and is actually finally making headway into America. And Americans don't play it for the most part because we aren't in good enough shape to . There is no reason to think it will lose any ground while either of us are alive.

Regarding your first paragraph, that's valid. Point taken.

As for not showing any signs of slowing, I disagree. My whole point is that other sports are gaining ground, in particular rugby, basketball, and to a lesser extent cricket (mainly due to the Indian Subcontinent). I don't think its really making much headway into the US. It seemed like NASL got more mainstream interest in the 1970s than MLS gets today.

Rugby and cricket? Call me when those are played in the US, China, Mexico and Japan. Those two sports have less of a chance than Halo of becoming the next big thing in the world.

If I had to guess the second sport is either Baseball or Basketball and Baseball is in the process of fucking itself. Granted it's not so much dying bia losing popularity as it is by it's owners just doing ignorant shit but a few more lock outs and the why won't matter much.

I've never understood footie but I did enjoy playing soccer probably with all of the wrong rules when I was a boy we didn't know nothing about of sides.

The one thing that sucker seems to have going for it is as long as somebody brings a ball and you have a flat surface you can play the game anywhere with a group of people with limited skills... As they continue to play their skills improve and those skills translate to actually playing the game see you see people from the slums of wherever being stars.

No equipment is necessarily required you don't actually need anything but some sort of rude Mandiri goal and you don't have to technically have a ref as long as you can all sort of agree amongst yourselves about when it did or didn't go out of bounds.

I have trouble watching it for the same trouble reason I have watching some hockey a good game has virtually no score.

The opposite of which is basketball which is what has it to recommend. Basketball is much more exciting sport to watch I would think.

That said I watch nothing.

I'm pushing for lesbian mud wrestling.

The only thing you forgot is you have to be mad fit to play it. Even on a regular sized field all that running gets exhausting quick, and depressing just as quickly if you're losing.

Skill. Ruse, you remember skill, right?

Soccer is 'The World Sport' (as you like to call it) because anyone can make a ball and kick it around.

Heck, when I was a kid I pretended to be a world famous baseball player and ended up smashing a tooth out of my brother's mouth with a tomato stake.

Some people don't have a net or a hoop on a sturdy pole 7 metres high. Some people don't have a backboard. One thing we all have? A round thing. And we kick it around.

No suprise that you got moderated, the people who run these sites like Wikipedia and the Guardian are itolerant of opposing views.

I can tell you what turns me off on Soccer: The red card rule the flopping and winning by penalty shots.

I find the game as boring as golf to watch

How many times are you going to make a thread like this one?

Why don't you just say: 'Soccer sucks balls and I hate it' or 'I think I like rugby more'.

There is no competition between codes, champ.

It's like saying golf is better than tennis or swimming is better than squash or backgammon is better than chess. No sane person is going to agree with you. It's balls, mate. They're all fun games.

First of all, you're an alt. Nobody cares what you think.

Secondly, there are plenty of people who love soccer and golf.

You're just uneducated.

There are more Rugby clubs in Japan than any other country in the world - but they're not competitive internationally - players are too small.

The first international match in any sport was a cricket match played between USA and Canada in NY. in 1844. A fair crowd of 25,000 but the USA lost and perhaps never got over it!:)

Cricket is like baseball , a game for afficionadoes. The top teams are South Africa, Sri Lanka. Pakistan, India, Australia, West Indies, England. There is a lot of historical rivalry spiced up by different religions (Moslems, Christians, Budhists and Rasta's - different races, plus former colonies agin the Brits. But it will not replace soccer.

Worldwide, far more people play field Hockey than Ice Hockey.

Here's the thing: I think all those sports have been around nearly as long as soccer (basketball is 120 years old) or even longer, so you'd think if they were going to ever exceed soccer in popularity, it would have already happened.

If soccer gets dethroned, it will probably be by a sport that does not now exist.

American football is for drunks. The stadium is really a large tavern with prettier women.

It will never be dethroned. For the reasons I just explained.
