Before the first game against England, they kept silent in the national anthem singing in protest of the woman headscarf incident at home, and in the third game where they could have won for qualification to the next stage they lost to the rival they did not want to lose the most-- USA.
So if their gov tries to persecute them, they have had every reason to be punished.

They live in a religious dictatorship, they knew the price they would pay for doing so upfront, and they still went ahead and did it. Why?
 
Headscarf incident? Way to minimize a womans unnecessary death at the hands of the morality police.
