Will gay elements in an otherwise hetero story put you off?

I am slowly working on a story which is quite varied in it's sexual themes. Most of my stories have many different themes and do not easily fall into just one category, especially recently.

The one I am currently working on could fall under the categories of being a hetero, BDSM, gay, lesbian and mind game story.

I would like to know if you think that putting a male-male scene in a story that is otherwise hetero would cause the straight crowd to be put off and not read it?

The story is not as graphic as my other stories, but I still wonder iff gay sex would putt off a straight reader. Either way, my story will remain the same but I am curious to know a reader or author's view of this.

Opinions please?

The only thing they put up at Lit that puts me of is mind control.

But then, I'm a fan of gay male, so I'm not one to ask.

It would not put me off. I am a bi female and i do not fine the idea of gay men in anyway off setting. I think sometimes what puts me off is the more graffic stories. I am more interested in plot and consequences than i am in pyrotechnics. I would be interested in reading your story. I think finding an effective way to blend themes within a workable plot is always interesting.

I generally don't read stories about male-male sex. However, I edited and thouroughly enjoyed a Gay Male story and just finished re-reading a 700,000 word story from MCSTORIES that contains a lot of male-male action and Bi-sexual action.

In both cases, the stories were stories first and erotic only where it fit the plot and characters. I think if your male-male action is "well written" (in the sense of being good story-telling) and it is essential to furthering the plot, then anyone who like reading will not be put off by it.

Someone who is more interested in the sex than the story is going to be upset, but most people can get involved in the story and deal with whatever the plot dictates without comment.

You will get "hate-mail" and low votes if you include it because there are a lot of people who are homophobic and don't understand that there's nothing wrong with male-male sex between two people who desire it. If you are willing to sacrifice some votes for your artistic integrity, well...

I'd say do what feels right for your story and damn the prudes!

thanks

Luckily, I have grown up a little (just a little) as a writer and I don't care much about votes anymore, so losing votes won't bother me a bit. I have several transgender stories here on Lit and strangely I have only gotten positive feedback on them, even from straight couples and such.

My goal in writing erotica is to create more story than just sex. I would like to create stories that do not fit just one category, but fit many themes and can still be enjoyable and perhaps even open the fantasies of people who never considered those things before. I have not put any new stories on Lit in a while because I have not been writing much, but I want and need to change that. I get really bored with the "blond cheerleader does three guys at a beach party" kind of erotica, though I have tried my hand at a couple like that.

I want to create stories with thick plot, character and development. Problem is, whenever I write something with substance as well as sex, I get feedback saying, "Good story, but focus more on the sex." When I focus more on the sex, people say "focus more on the story" so fuck them :)

Thank you for the opinions and suggestions. They will help much.

Homophobic? Here?

Yo'l get good feedback from other "authors" but not from the readers who come shere to slap the salami...the thing to remember is this...the bishop-floggers alone will probably not finish the story anyway...they'll find the gay sex scene and back out, not even voting. FOr the most part, the people who frequent here and read the stories all the way through, regardless of how much sex, tend to be writers and are therefore open-minded.
I'm about as straight as they come (no, I'm not trying to be macho) but the idea of two men wouldn't turn me off, just wouldn't turn me on either. If it's necessary for the plot, then I'll read it and think little of it. If it's forced, like a lot of the sex scenes on this site tend to be...it'll be a turn-off regardless of what type of sex it is.
As far as feedback goes...I've read some of your stories (two of them, I think--the one in the elevator and the one about the carnival--they were both your's, right?) and thought they were very well presented...and well-written. People who ask you to focus more on the sex are probably looking for something to jerk off to, and therefore, don't want plot to get in the way. They're looking for good porn...
And BTW, I know what you mean by "grown up a little (just a little) as a writer and I don't care about votes anymore." i write for myself, but I watch the vote count...oh, yes...thus far, I've stayed above a "4" on all of them (knock on wood), and I am proud of that...

Sateema,

I have several stories here with same sex elements of varying degrees. In one series (Suburban Sprawl), I have two mjor scenes - one heterosexual, one homosexual - and it got mixed reviews. Another series (Rest Stop) was entirely homosexual action, but the lead character professed to be heterosexual. This one was popular with gay readers, but I didn't hear a lot from straight readers. Two other series' (Pro Bono and New Horizons) had mixed action scenes that seem to be VERY popular with straight amd gay readers of both sexes. I have received a lot of positive feedback on those.

I have to agree with WH - readers are looking for good stories. Even in cases where the subject matter may make them a little uncomfortable, it has been my experience that they people still appreciate well planned, well executed storylines. Hell, it may even help people discover interests they weren't aware of!

Quiet_Cool, thanks for reading my stories. Yes, both were mine.

Everyone's comments have really helped. I was very curious as to what the reaction might be. The male/male elements are needed in my story, since the story is a psychological thriller in which one man must have a sexual tension with the other to make it work, but primarily the story focuses on a man's relationship with two women.

Hello,
I've been thinking about this topic lately. It seems that female/female scenes are more acceptable, we just don't see the male/male scenes in the hetero stories much. IMHO both issues CAN be equally erotic...if well written. Your stories are good...keep them coming and write whatcha feel like! Good luck...

Put off by gay elements?

I can't think of any gay elements that could put me off.

The only thing that puts me off is if the gay behavior is not believable or not "in character."

For example, it would take some really good writing to convince me that someone could use mind control to get someone who was really straight to commit to a gay act. I'm not saying that it can't be done or hasn't been done just that it would take a great setup to get it to be believable.

I have a couple of stories that basically run the gamut of gender combinations (the "Stephanie Tops..." stories and "Tina".) I'm not bisexual in my real life, but I tend to enjoy the types of stories where there are few boundaries. I work with and know *way* too many "macho bullshit" types, and I just get tired of it.

I don't read too many strictly male-male stories, but I find the idea of a guy making love to a woman, then turning and sucking the guy next to him to be alright. It's the destruction of a wall that limits pleasure too much. And how many of us out there are writing to break down walls? whether in real life or in our own minds?

While I don't find myself looking at other guys in real life and wondering what they'd be like in the sack, I find reading about such encounters to be acceptable, often even arousing.

I try to write primarily to satisfy myself. I know I can't make everybody happy. That's patently impossible. So, the voting thing, while at times flattering, isn't my main reason for posting my stories to the site. I've read enough stuff to say, "That's really good," or "I can do better than that."

Primarily, the one to satisfy is you. If the story demands that you put a certain type of scene in, to hell with anybody else. Especially if you feel changing the scene would detract from the effectiveness of your story. It's *your* creation.

In most of my stories, I think of the characters as all bisexual, even if they do not interact with the same sex. Strange I know, but perhaps since I am bisexual and everyone in my family is bisexual, I have grown up with no taboo about the subject. To me, my character creations are all bisexual.

Thanks again for the help :)
