His reputation had long since preceded him out the door.
 
It's better for him, if he does, yes. And it may not be just his reputation he's considering. He quite likely has gotten further into the criminal than he can handle and he needs whatever he can get to hedge on that. Claiming he's being pressured too much to do the illegal and quitting may be the best move available to him.

The Trump administration is nothing but a chaotic junk yard. Barr may later try to characterize himself as having been a day-care handler of Trump, but his reputation is shot.

He's destined for the same moldy bin of history that contains John N. Mitchell, Donald Rumsfeld. Dick Cheney, and Stephen Miller.
