In the second of the categories you name, here's a plot bunny: Vera Atkins, spy trainer for the British Special Operations Executive in World War II. She selected and trained UK and Commonwealth women as agents in Occupied France, the greatest number of whom were betrayed and killed due to the incredible stupidity of their (male) handlers.
