Hi guys, I am wondering the best format for my police drama stories. Do y'all think they work better with separate sex stories and non-erotic police drama stories? or better with sex intermingled with the police drama?

Also, any other constructive ideas you may have on formatting and story presentation will be gratefully accepted!

Thanks for the input.

why not try a test chapter and see how it goes? i'd opt for the latter myself, but non-erotic might work. do them in lee child (jack reacher) style. short, gritty sentences.

You're on my reading list, but there are others ahead of you. If you can be patient, I'll get back to you in the next week or so.

Sight unseen, my preference would be for sex mixed in with the crime stories. The Non-erotic section is kind of a forgotten room here at Lit. Stuff that goes in there tends to be forgotten.

I've done it both ways within my submissions so far. I'm trying to get an idea of which way works better with readers. For myself, when I review and proofread the stories, the actual sex scenes are almost a distraction from the police drama stories, but I realize I'm seeing that from the writer's point of view. I'm hoping to get feedback on what the readers think, so i can write the stories in a way that the most people get the best reading experience.

if you're not bothered about scores and red H's and all that, then non-erotic could be a good vehicle. if you have a few readers already they could drift across there to check the scenes out. who know, eh?

either way - good luck. and enjoy. :)

Intermingled. When I started writing erotic mysteries my publisher gave me a little list of "musts." At the top of the list was that it was erotica; there should be something erotic in every chapter unless it was an extremely short transition chapter.

I do want red "H"s, as they show up more often in searches. But what I really want is to give the best stories for both ratings AND readers' enjoyment. If' they'd enjoy more having a story that is non-erotic and a story that is all sex, I can do that. If they would rather have sex included within the overall story, I can do that.

My own thoughts upon re-reading some of my stories is that the sex jumps in right in the middle of the story and actually distracts from the rest of the drama. Then again, some here might want ONLY the sex and would skip and search for sex scenes only.

Ergo I'm trying to ask for feedback about which way would appeal to readers.

If you're thinking you write nonerotic best, shouldn't you also be thinking you're posting to the wrong story site? This is an erotica site. It has nonerotic stories on it, yes, but it's still an erotica site.

And that kind of "musts" may make stories awkward to read: the erotic parts very often stand out as being tacked on. It should come naturally, and that means it doesn't necessarily come every chapter.

I've read such stories on Lit, where the author wrote at the start "it's erotica, so there will be sex in every chapter". For some chapters that just didn't work well...

These are real publishers. They just don't accept the manuscript if sex isn't well integrated. Apples and kumquats.

I agree, you can tell when its forced in. I did that in a couple of my SWB chapters, then I started doing it in another one and said fuck it, if they don't like it they can give me a one and move along.

I have a lot of comments in the later chapters telling me they were reading for story over sex. I'm sure I lost readers, but who cares we don't get paid by numbers here.

Not really no matter where the story is posted if the sex had to be stuffed in there it can make the story looked contrived and not be a good read. Where it's a good read is irrelevant.

You were just looking for another chance to claim you have "real publishers"

Ah, my stalker following me around on the board.

I don't know what what you posted has to do with publishers wanting the sex to meld in before taking the manuscript.

Whatever Pinocchio your "real publishing" is an excuse for you to try to sound like you're better than everyone else here. More of your "good enough for lit" crap.

You are a sick, out-of-control, obsessed stalker, Lovecraft68. You are destroying this forum with your sickness. (Just in case you haven't noticed).

Okay guys, let's kindly not fight, at least not on my thread. :)

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far. I hope those of you that read my stories can give more feedback on how (specifically) my stories are doing integrating the sex and drama, or would think it's better to have erotic and non-erotic chapters. I understand the general opinions; just looking to see how my stories best fit the readers' collective eye. I know I can't please everyone all of the time, just looking for the bestest for the mostest, if you know what I mean.

Thanks again,
WW
