Different story

Years ago (1980s maybe) I read a short story: MC is an Army Officer in Germany, he goes on deployments. One mission gets back a day or two early. His wife is not at home until the day he was supposed to get back. Then she lies about it, he doesn't tell her that he knows she wasn't home.

He figures she is having an affair and figures a way to get out of his next mission. He pretends to deploy and then follows her, she isn't having an affair...

She is a KGB agent.
