Sveta;

This is one of those classic situations that I just love. At first glance, it seems to be all worn out, but there’s always so much you can do with it! I think that the paramour hiding under the bed when hubby walks into the bedroom has to be one of the first scenes that pops into the skulls of anyone trying to write a cuckold story. The only one more common than that, is the one where the lover hides himself in the closet.

Let’s see if we can breathe some life into this tired bag of skin and bones.

When I think of this scene, I immediately grab onto the old standard; young beautiful wife, rugged handsome lover, and the older, plain looking husband. It is almost always written so that the sympathy goes to the young couple, while the husband is vilified. We gain amusement by watching him walk about oblivious while the man who just had his wife lurks close by. We like the suspense. Will the husband discover the lover, or not? We also like to see the wife’s reaction. Does she remain cool when the pressure is on, or is she a nervous wreck the entire time?

If we pick apart our expectations, we might be able to make something of this scenario. First of all, let’s change the cast. There is a wife, a husband and a lover. Let’s make the lover female. We will also age the wife and reduce the age of the husband. Let’s make the lover the same age as the wife, perhaps childhood friends. Also, make the husband incredibly attractive, while keeping the wife’s appearance rather plain. By twisting around the stereotype, we’re forced to question the situation instead of merely accepting it. Why would an older, plain looking woman who had herself a young Adonis of a husband ever cheat on him? Why would she choose a woman as her lover? If the husband does discover her infidelity, what will he do? Will he even care?

Setting up questions that the reader desperately wants to have answered is important in a good story. The careful selection of your cast can help you in this respect.

Next, let’s play with the context. I prefer darker stories, or stories that reveal some truth about the human condition. Those that do both are my favourites. The two lovers were not just having sex, they were talking about stealing the young man’s inheritance. They plan to play upon his youth and inexperience to swindle him out of his vast fortune. They have been lovers longer than the 20-year-old man has been alive, and plan to continue their relationship. But neither one finds the thought of poverty appealing. They’ll do whatever they must to hold onto the man’s wealth, while ridding themselves of the man.

This background serves to raise the stakes, and to define the protagonist (who may or may not be the hero) of the story. If the lovers are portrayed as being conniving or murderous, sympathy will automatically go to the husband. Make the lovers funny, warm and likable, and sympathy might well rest with them, no matter what wickedness they plan to perpetrate upon the fellow.

Setting the stakes and posing the story question helps to keep the readers focussed on the tale, and the writer from trying to cram in too many elements into his story.

Just some ideas I had. I don’t intend to tackle this project, but I couldn’t resist playing with the idea a little bit. I hope someone finds something in here that they can work with.

Cheers!
