Staring up at the decrepit house that stood abandoned several miles off the end of Abarnathy Street hidden away in a copse of trees, Eden stopped and took a second to question her sanity. She’d really rather be anywhere but here, but she was trying this new thing called being sociable because apparently both her mother and her best friend Bree thought she was too much of a “wet blanket”. That clearly wasn’t working out so well for her, if her current locale was anything to go by.
Bree had been Eden’s best friend since childhood. She was a bit of a social butterfly and had managed to flit between various parties and sororities until she’d managed to accumulate a large group of friends. Eden preferred to be on her own, much more introverted, but after listening to her mother nag for an hour over the phone last Saturday night while Eden hid in one of the dimly lit corners of the library with her face buried in her laptop. Both girls had grown to be practically inseparable over the last couple years and when Eden decided she wanted to go into the medical field and become a Medical Examiner (she didn’t have to worry about her socially awkward communication skills when she spent the day with corpses; they didn’t bother her with small talk) Bree had followed closely behind and enrolled into the same university, Green Hill State. Only, Bree attended the first rate drama program it offered.
A few days prior, Eden had been sucked into attending one of the meetings of Bree’s Improv 0117 class project group. After everyone had packed up and prepared to head home for the night Bree’s current crush Hunter had spoken up and proposed that they all hang out this weekend off campus and do something fun. Of course there was no way for Eden’s bestie to say no in fear of making herself look like the odd one out, so she had unknowingly suckered herself and Eden into a Friday night outing to the local haunted house.
Because that’s what “the cool kids did” around here.
According to Hunter, no less than seven people had died in horrific ways in this old abandoned place. The last people who had owned it disappeared like thieves in the night never to be seen again almost three years ago now and nobody had ventured near it since. It was a local attraction for drunken teens looking to prove how large their family jewels were by sneaking inside on a dare, but several of those had come back white as a ghost and unable to even talk about their experiences there.
Eden didn’t really believe in anything like that - sure, once in a while she enjoyed reading a supernatural romance novel but that was as far as her attraction to the subject matter went. She was always sceptical when she watched shows on television detailing other people’s experiences in locations that were said to be “haunted” but she couldn’t deny the uncomfortable niggling feeling in her belly as her eyes roved over the dark, broken windows and the peeling siding.
The lawn was overgrown and there were two steps missing that had rotted out over the years and never repaired. The door was flung wide open and almost torn from the hinges but there was bright yellow police tape still crossing from one side of the bulging frame to the other. In the fading light of day as it bled into dusk, the house was quite honestly terrifying. All the trees on the property looked dead.
Eden swallowed her nerves and straightened her shoulders. She had been mostly quiet throughout the evening as the group had a quick dinner at a local burger joint while they hammered out the plan: they’d all go in pairs and investigate one floor each (there was six of them who hadn’t ended up backing out). They’d meet back downstairs at ten to discuss what they’d found. Hunter was leading the group and Bree shot Eden one pleading look before she latched herself onto his arm and declared that she was going to be his partner.
Eden couldn’t even open her mouth to argue.
In the end, she ended up being paired with a nice guy named Kevin who also tended to be a bit shy and recede into the background like Eden preferred to do. She hated being the centre of attention. She’d never had a problem managing that before.

Surprisingly (or not), the evening was actually largely uneventful. Other than a couple creaking floorboards and some nasty spiderwebs clinging to her hair, the weirdest thing they experienced all night was the moaning of the house shifting underneath them as the wind howled through it. Hunter was nonplussed. He’d expected something a little … more exciting.
He complained that the house was “taunting” them and then he must have had a bright idea because his face lit up.
“Oh shit, you know, I just remembered! You guys ever hear of ouija boards? My buddy had this one that his sister was tryna get rid of so I took it off her hands. I still got it in the car, actually. Lemme go get it and we’ll finish this night off right!”
There was a round of protestations from some of the more superstitious of the group, Bree included, though somewhat more subdued.
Eden raised her eyebrow. Of course she’d heard horrific stories about people who had summoned dark spirits and been accosted by them following a session with the boards but that was all just rumour meant to scare children and keep them in their beds at night. It was all nonsense. She wasn’t scared.
With some heavy encouragement, one-by-one the rest of the group agreed to use the board. Only Kevin opted himself out with a firm “no fucking way - I’m not being a part of this craziness. Y’all don’t bother calling me when you can’t sleep because you got demons breathing down your neck!” Eden had to say she was amazed that he could be so forceful, considering he’d been cowering against her side not more than an hour ago as he screamed and quaked in fright. But despite his protests, Kevin couldn’t bring himself to leave entirely - he sat outside on the porch while the group communed with the spirits.
Sitting in a circle with one finger on the planchette with only the lights from their flashlights to help them read, Hunter’s grin looked maniacal.
“Alright. Let’s do this, motherfuckers. I know one of these dead ass ghosts have something to say to us. Who’s here with us?” He demanded. “My name is Hunter. I’ve heard lots of stories about this place and there has got to be some reason people keep ending up bitin’ it. Give me something to talk about!”
There was that feeling again - something uncomfortable roiling in her gut.
There was a jerk underneath their fingertips and the planchette began moving.
Eden’s deep green eyes widened and she almost yanked her hand back but at the last moment Bree exclaimed, “don’t let go!” and grasped Eden’s wrist with her free hand. “Whatever you do - don’t let go.”
“I won’t,” Eden promised. “Whichever one of you losers is doing this won’t scare me off - stop fucking about and be serious. Let me start over; hello. My name is Eden. Can I ask who is with us right now?”
