I've been seeing a rash of Hs on poems with three comments.
What good does it do for the writer? At worst it looks suspect, at best it makes the people who read look lazy. Or are all you just wasting your logorrheic skills composing new shit, praising each other? You make a value judgement, let's see who and why. I doubt they are all new readers wandering in.

On the other hand,
there is a guy by the name of fly,
admittedly I don't like him,
BUT HE OFTEN LEAVES A REASON
sometimes a good one

so when I praise him, as I do now

at least he will know it's not false and empty

On one poem I have more comments than votes, not that I am complaining, rather that than the other way round.

As for more people reading poems, to me there appears to be less. Since I've returned to Lit from a short absence, unfortunately things seem to be rather quiet.

.

Perhaps if more poets & other folks would go and on comment on poems there'd be more readers. In my recent process of digging through Lit's poetic archives I've noticed on several occasions that someone else would also comment on one of those older poems shortly after I'd left a comment. It would appear that folks are taking cues from the comments that appear in the feedback portal. I just wonder how many more are just reading without leaving comments in response to what they see in the feedback portal.

.

Thankfully, everyone isn't privy to the feedback sent in emails. Sometimes there are a few left that way rather than on the public boards, giving both the commentator and the poet a bit of privacy, something I'm sure we all value.

in my time here, i have been through the whole comment, voting thing.

quickly seeing a vote for what it is, totally pointless, i stopped voting, but continued to read and comment.

there was a long period of time, close to a year i think, where i read every single poem every single day, and commented on any i thought could use it, and sent just as many thoughts through private messages.

i have taken my turn trying to support and improve this community. and now, time does not allow me to do that any longer. truthfully, i think the long hours i spent produced a result not nearly worth the effort.

and, because of that past experience, it also feels beyond my ability to leave any comments that might wind up being productive in any significant manner.

if i ever leave a comment again, this will be it – i will leave only this one, for only those writers who i think are serious about their writing, and i will do it over and over and over (and i suggest this comment to anyone who does still leave comments, and agrees with it) --

if you wish to make an effort in this community to improve your poetry, stop posting poems here and come over to the poetry boards. that is where any real learning that happens to take place in this joint occurs.

Yes, actually. I'm mostly writing logorrheic prose at the moment. :)

I go through phases in commenting on things. When I am trying to write, the commenting suffers. When I am commenting, the writing suffers--or at least drops in volume. It's fairly cyclical.

I haven't been reading many of the new posted poems. I find the ratio of bad poems to good poems there is not very rewarding normally. It is, as TRM suggests, much better on some of the writing threads here in the PDF. Though I think one of the problems here is that the number of comments on people's writing is even less than if you post your poem.

Commenting is difficult. I find it takes as much or more work as writing a poem does. Often when you comment, you get zero feedback from the person whose poem you have commented on, which is discouraging. And yes, I am as bad as anyone at that.

Anyone who has been here any length of time knows that production (of poems, comments, or even general chit-chat) waxes and wanes. That's just the way it is.

But you're right. I should comment more on poems.

I've tended to send emails or invite people in comments to email me for more info. It allows more indepth feedback. I don't have time to do it much now and have been posting a bit on another site. Not sure if that one will work out but at least I didn't post nude photos of myself there, so I might have a shot of making friends. :-D

*crosses fingers*

I am of the mind that when reading a poem, it is better to take a moment and write

"damn, this was good"

than to enjoy it without saying anything.

I think that one of the reasons there are not as many comments is because of the push that these kind of comments are not helpful. Hell, they are helpful to me. Surely, to give an in-depth exploration and analysis might be more helpful, maybe not, but I think that this place is as much social as it is a place to learn AND there is nothing wrong with that. We are social animals. We want to feel recognized and noticed. At least I do and I know that it must be true of others.

There is the poetry discussion circle for people who want more in depth work on their poem. There is not enough time to do that with everything, so to give a nod, a simple "Hey, I read your poem today" is better than nothing.

If you are sincere, then that is all that matters. I am not going to leave positive comments on poems that are not to my liking, but to leave a quick message is IS helpful. It lets a person know that they are being read, being noticed, if people did not want to be read and be noticed, they would not be posting here at all.... and that may encourage them to write more, and writing more is always a good thing.

I do not read all of the new poems, and I can't. But I am also not going to beat myself up for leaving a quick comment here and there that is nothing beyond a nod and saying I like what you have done here because it is better than passing on a comment because you do not have the time to leave something specific, which of course is better BUT....

Damn, that was a good post. ;)

Anna, seriously though, you've said what I was thinking as I read this thread. I don't read/comment on the New poems as much as I did the last 4 years I've been here. I think it's because this year there is something missing—poems from people I recognize and poems from those I've known since I signed up? I haven't figured it out yet, but whatever it is, I hope it comes back.

Are you saying you want me to start submitting poems again  ?

I am actually thinking that I want to start sending in poems again, forget trying to be "perfect" and just share what I have whatever it is.

I so agree with this. I actually preferred commenting on poetry submissions here when (nonforum) feedback was done solely via email or pm. I think the comments I got that way were honest, and I never minded the ones that were--shall we say--critical because critique is more helpful than praise. The comments I gave publically were more likely to be swayed by what the other commenters said. Sometimes that's good because other readers may have reflected on nuances of the poems I missed. Usually though it is just "loved it, great job, blah blah," which is nice but not constructive.

Commenting privately may be less politically correct (i.e., not so good for the commenter's public image), but more conducive to solid critique imo. The whole vote/comment ambiance of today's poetry submissions seems to me more rooted in politcs and reputation than critique. I realize that's not true for everyone here and I don't mean to insinuate anything about anyone--I just think a private comment is less likely to be motivated by anything but reaction to the poem than a public one.

And ok, I'm a hypocrite because I never have time to read poems here anymore, much less comment on them publically or privately. . . but I found time to share this opinion.

Everything said re: public comments applies to me.

Yes, I should make more.

Yes, they take a lot of effort that sometimes is squandered on a poet unwilling to edit or gracefully accept critique.

Yes, it's harder than ice to leave a politically correct review when all you want to do is tell the poet to go back to school or jail, whichever is appropriate.

Yes, I find time to procrastinate on the boards rather than write 2 days word count for nano2006, which is very difficult when your prose muse has fled to hell and gone in favour of supplying you with a plot.

Yes, shockingly, there is good poetry on a porn site.

Yes, I should submit more poems but I really, really am tired of the ratings and votes popularity contests which, no matter what, creep in to poison everyone from time to time.
I'll comment and vote when the mood strikes me, not because someone thinks I should be out there and encouraging poets, I'm here if they want to find me.

I am a bad bad lazy person and have not even been writing much at all!
I did however make arrangements for someone to tear down our old shed for free, haul off all of the junk along with the barn wood that he wants... big savings of $700 bucks, got the heater (temporarily) fixed, trees trimmed from off the roof, cleaned out the garage and trained the puppy how to sit-stay with crazy distractions everywhere.

Besides I got spanked for submitting my poems other places after they were here. Did you miss the spanking? It stung!

Well, shame on you for having Other Stuff to do. You should know better.

I musta missed that spanking. Damn, I never miss a spanking.

You've identified a key element in drawing and keeping poets in Lit's family. Some folks are more gluttons for punishment and keep commenting but if all Lit's poets commented from time to time {whenever the mood struck them}, it might improve the social ambiance  here at Lit. And in the process, perhaps more poems would be written.

If some comments are more detailed critiques, that is the choice of the commentator. If some prefer to offer up detailed critiques via PM, that too is an option. Welcoming new poets in comments/PMs might also include, for the better ones, a suggestion to join with other poets in the PFD. But it's no sin to just tell the poet that you've enjoyed their piece.

And, yes, some are just too awful for words - I don't care how much of a 'gentleman' y'all think me to be - I will not greet some of that crud, no matter how much of a civil and neighborly thing it might be.

.

I used to comment

I used to comment a lot, but in spite of the fact that my comments were positive in nature, offering either praise or advice and finding good in most any poem I was invaribly attacked repeatedly by one person for allegedly shitting on peoples poems, low voting and attacking people. When I commented I tried my best to find the heart and soul of the poem I was commenting upon, spending a lot of time in reading, re-reading, analysing why it worked or didn't in my opinion and then giving a fair, honest and positive comment.

To see someone merely gladhand comments on poems in an effort to recruit more favorible voting on their own poems was disheartening. For that person to have the gall to attack me for my comments was reprehensible. I have stopped commenting because of one person's attacks, a number of other people have done the same. I think if you feel more commenting is a positive thing perhaps you might take it up the those who attack people who offer their time and insight in offering honest, knowledgeable comments.

...and I thought I'd get my ass in a jam for this thread. :rose:
You all surprise me,
in a good way :rose:

thanks...

It's just that it seems a lot of people are in agreement that honest comment and discussion on the posted poems is something that will make the poetry here better for all of us, will make the poetry forum more popular and keep poets who visit here interested. So ironic considering what has happened here in the last couple of years.

Decayed Angel, I agree that this is so. I think it is useful to critique poems as someone who wants the poet to improve as I'm sure folks here are doing. Here I depart a bit from the general opinion by noting that "this sucks" isn't terribly useful. If someone wants to indicate what it was that they didn't like, that might be helpful.

Also, it's good to mention whatever worked about the poem so that the author knows what to keep doing. I think people mostly do this so this is maybe stating the obvious to almost everyone.

I think (and have always thought) that simply giving a poem a 1 rating with no comment is useless. Giving a 5 with no comment is useful only as a confidence builder (but that can be bad if the poet has no criticism from other quarters to help him/her grow).

Best wishes to everyone in your poetic growth and journeys.

Peace,

Debra

I don't think the general opinion here is that "this sucks" is either useful or proper.

What I have complained about is that when I commented, I did take the time to understand a poem, find what I felt worked and didn't work in the poems and included that information in my comment. I took the time to find something positive to build upon in even the weakest efforts that I commented on and I did work to find possible alternatives to consider in even the strongest poems.

I think if you look at the comments I made, when I was commenting and doing the new poems reviews (as Jthserra), I think you would agree that the comments never descended to the "this sucks" or was anything that could be even remotely considered as shitting on someone's poem. And yet I have been repeatedly accused of this.

Several other poets have faced the same problems here and have either stopped or greatly reduced their commenting. I fully understand their decision.

The problem here is that when some of have tried to comment as you indicated:

If someone wants to indicate what it was that they didn't like, that might be helpful.

Also, it's good to mention whatever worked about the poem so that the author knows what to keep doing. I think people mostly do this so this is maybe stating the obvious to almost everyone.

Some have been attacked for doing exactly what you recommend above, and have stopped commenting. This is truely sad because I think that these serious commentors sometimes actually showed more care and insight into the poem when commenting than the author often did when writing it.

There was a time when things seemed to work, there was a large number of active poets who shared comments on poems, who were interesting in improving their craft and the poetry was considered on its own merit, not looked as like a popularity contest. Poems were often found on the feedback lists as having the most feedback. Sadly, things changed and I think the poetry here has suffered. Sure we still see some fantastic work here, but back then it came from so many different poets, so many different voices. Now the fantastic work is mostly coming from a handful of people, some who remain here, some who leave.

MNS asked why... the answer is clear to me.

okay I am kicking myself, but I looked at the toplist tonight, has anyone seen it? What a hoot!!!! Every single one (okay except BandAid and maybe another one) starts with the letter A and has a 5 rating. Go figure that! Ha!!

Isn't that hilarious? come on giggle with me. :cathappy:

A for absurdity.

okay now come along and spank me and tell me the top list does not matter (I know I know I know it doesn't) it is just funny is all.

And the good thing-- oxalis and 2Rivers got poems on the top list. Was bound to happen.

A for absurdity.

okay now come along and spank me and tell me the top list does not matter (I know I know I know it doesn't) it is just funny is all.

And the good thing-- oxalis and 2Rivers got poems on the top list. Was bound to happen.

:cathappy:
