i know we have some smart computer people here so heres my question. i recently switched isp, i went from aol to @ home. why am i unable to receive attachment email from aol members? please answer if you can help.thanks

iron, I'm no computer wizard here, but I do know that if your friends are sending you items "inserted" in the e-mail (ya' know, inserted in the text portion of the e-mail), there's no way for anyone who's not on aol to view that. They need to "attach" the jpg, or gif, for example, not "insert" it.

Hope that helps...if not, I tried.

Aol SUCKS I have alot of friends that are on aol and they can't send me alot of things and they try to come here to literotica and can't get it in. I have talked with folks that work with aol and they claim they are currently working on it.
Not much help here but I have had trouble in the past also.

OK,OK..I get the message...<sheesh>

Sorry guys, i get on my soapbox where AOL is concerned...

<kicks soapbox to little pieces>

soapbox........BAD

AOL.........BAD

WIZARD......Right about AOL

Basically, AOL is a proprietery system, and they scramble all attachments sent through their system...They claim this is not their fault, at least most of the time, but that of the ISPs (of which AOL is not, AOL is not an ISP!!) AOL could allow the sending of attachments unscrambled if they wanted, but they don't...I have the same problem..Anytime I send anything to someone on AOL they don't receive the attchment....

So, basically, what you're saying MM, in as few words as possible (obviously) is that AOL is not an ISP, right?

Not to defend AOL (AOL sucks, remember?), but my sister swears by it. And we have no problem sending and receiving attachments from her AOL account to my ISP account. Go figure.

As to your problem, irontoto, I don't really have an answer. Sorry.

I'm gonna say this as nicely as I can so I don't get flamed too harshly... AOL people are used to doing things a certain way, and when they surf around and find that the rest of the Net is NOT just one big extension of AOL, they can get (some, not all) a little snotty. An example of this is the picture thing... I had a woman try to send me pics for the Amateur section within email, AOL style. I wrote her a very polite email explaining that I couldn't use the pics sent that way, that she needed to send them as atttachments, etc. She wrote back a rather nasty note about how picky and difficult I was being... like I really could use the pics she sent but I was just trying to make her life more difficult because that's what I like to do - make everyone's life more difficult. I wrote her one more letter trying to explain the problem in detail, but she never wrote back. Ah well.

I'm impressed, Laurel. That's the longest explanation I've seen of AOL to AOL users without someone having to use the words "fuck", "shit" and "goddamn".

Ok, I'm an All-around user. I use AOl, Hotmail, ICQ, AIM...whatever I can get my hands on. Aol does have it's positives as well as it's downfalls. Whomever told you to tell your friends to attach things by hand instead of inserting them in Email was correct. That is the way to send things to people. The problem is that most AOl users have never learned how the rest of the Net works. AOl is one big cushion. It's good to use for when you need it, and horrible for when you just want to read email (stray messages get in the way). Don't get too pissed weith these unknowing people. Just be patient!

Never had a problem with AOL in that respect. <shrugs> Guess I'm just lucky. The only time I have any trouble with Literotica is the 500 errors. And as for Laurel's problem with that woman, some people are just jerks!

See what restraint I have? I amazed myself, even...

The only time I have any trouble with Literotica is the 500 errors.

Argh, tell me about it. Manu and I are putting serious time, effort, & (gulp) cash into fixing the 500 error issue. It was supposed to be fixed last week, but for some reason (here comes the whine) things that are simple for others seem to be complicated messes for us. Other sites install servers with no problems - we try it and it's shit-city. Ah well... By the end of this week (let's all cross our fingers) 500 errors should be a thing of the past.

And as for Laurel's problem with that woman, some people are just jerks!

Amen, sister...

AOL SUCKS!! I know this from personal experience. I joined AOL in the old days when it first started and it was great. Two years ago I joined a large group that sued them for shitty and illegal service. We won and I got some money back. The best thing you can do if you use AOL is to dump them as fast as you can. That is if you can ever get them to cancel your membership and quit charging your card!!

There, there, Laurel. <gives her a hug> We all still love you. And look, so many of us are very patient and keep coming back!
smile.gif
You're doing a great job and we appreciate it very much.

Laurel honey 500 errors are a bitch, but we'll survive, at least we have so far. Many thanks for all of the effort you and Manu have put in.

As to the questiong, no idea We don't have AustraliaOL to fuck the world up.

Uh, Phantom...you DO realize that AOL is an ISP, and Hotmail, ICQ, and AIM are not? Not to mention, probably about 80-95% of us here have used or do use one of those. All I'm saying is...your point????

I wouldn't go near AOL personally...you know what I love? When an AOL user can't understand the difference between AOL and the internet.

Hi Patryn,

AOL would like you to think their an ISP.. But their not..An ISP simply provides people an access point into the internet. AOL access to the internet is just one of their services..

The difference is that is that when yyou first log onto AOL, you are not on the internet, you are on AOL and floating in their computers in Virginia. If you want to get on the internet with AOL, you have to make an additional connection through to the internet through their system.

With an ISP, as soon as you log on you are on the internet. With AOL you can stay on line for hours without ever getting on the internet. You could spend all your time just in their computers without ever being on the net.

Example: if you and I lived 1 mile apart (in Hawaii for example) and both of us had local ISPs, all of our communications with each other would look for the shortest route possible. Our correspondence may never leave the islands...However, if just one of us were on AOL, then every correspondence between us would be routed through AOL's computers in Virginia. Thats how they work it..One of the reasons attachments have a difficult time going between AOL and non-AOL persons. AOL's computers like to scramble non AOL attachments.

AOL would love to have everyone think, their an ISP...

Sorry about my post, it is not a dig at you. Its at AOL, they don't like people to know what they really are...just a content provider that controls every correspondence to or from their members.

No harm done, Magic. I hate AOL, too, but didn't really want to get into the particualars and semantics.

I've noticed a general trend amongst AOLers as well...not all of them by any means, but a few I know. These people are dear friends of mine, but they are also SPAMMERS!! My friend on AOL, Shane, feels compelled to send me every joke, "prayer", or touching anecdote he gets...sad thing is, a) I don't care and b) I've probably had at least 2 other people send them to me. Nothing to do with AOL itself....wait...could it be that comfy "buddy" atmosphere?

What I find scary about AOL is their recent decision to offer free AOL accounts to schools/students. They're limited to keep kids out of sites like this one, but I have to agree with the oppoenents of this plan that it's simply a ploy to create 'brand loyalty' to AOL in impressionable children.

It's the thought that AOL, the company that advertised with "Ma! Pa done shot up the internet again" and other similar commercials designed to attract rednecks and other similar stereotypes is going to teach my granddaughters to surf. (Thank god they are getting a proper education of the internet from their parents.)

I know several AOL users, and am even related to to a couple. I don't want to stereotype all AOL users unfairly. However, It's definitely an 'idiot proof system', i.e. a system only an idiot is comfortable with. <G>

magic merlin,

If you want to get on the internet with AOL, you have to make an additional connection through to the internet through their system.

-A more simple explanation is that AOL is a Gateway to the internet.

Wizard, you didn't see that..Say it 20 times..I did not see that..I did not see .....

You didn't see anything Wizard, that was just a brain fart..

Anyways, I just have to let go of my distaste for AOL. And get off soapbox...

Hey, Wiz, Angelique is here..What you say we grab her and find LL and go have another virgin party?
