Hi,
I have a question. My story, My Dream Lover (shameless plug), was very recently submitted as an Erotic Horror, but it was categorized as Non-Human. Why?

True, there's no blood and gore. True, it's more subtly scary, but doesn't the author decide where it goes. Example: A story I have written that's at my Editor, is a Non-Consent story. However, the 'victim' is also a virgin. Is this gonna be categorized as First Time? The second installment, which I'm writing at this time, is also a Non-Consent, but it is more an Interracial, which I want it to be listed as. Am I going to have to worry about this?

Only Laurel can asnwer that question. Changing categories is an editorial decision -- as in "Managing Editor" rhather than "content editor."

If you feel strongly about what category your story should be in, make sure you put something in the comment sction of your submission to indicate that you've targeted a specific audience/category.

Laurel doesn't change many story categories -- at least not as a percentage of stories she approves. However, consider that Laurel HAS made a decision on what category to place each and every story on this site, which gives her far more experience in making that decision than any single author.

Don't worry, somewhere I read on a thread Laurel stating that any stories involving non-consent would be categorized as such. Likely, your erotic horror story was only switched because it was believed that it would appeal to more readers in the non-human category.

Thank to all for you responses. I think this is a good indication that I AM an author, they frequently disagree with their editors. In the end; hoever, It's all good.

msboy,

You might have hit upon the ultimate definition of a writer. :)

I had a lesbian voyeur/exhibition story that I categorized under voy/exhibit. Laurel placed it in lesbian.

I did ask her, and she felt the expectation of the category was 'straight couples', and that it was probably, for my scoring and PC benefit, that it go into lesbian. I requested, for experiment sake, it be placed in Voy/ex anyhow.

It did not do too bad, but after a couple months, out of curiosity, I requested the change to lesbian, where it has done slightly better.

Anyhow, that's my experience. :)

IMHO, the classic guideline for category selection is the one I learned from KillerMuffin back when I was just a wee Lit virgin: go with the category that will piss off the fewest people. The only category Laurel routinely tries to steer stories away from is Erotic Couples because it's so big.

It's a wonder how any stories at all end up in Loving Wives.

I think most people know that "loving" is a euphemism for "fucking". So it's really "Fucking Wives." I like fucking wives.

One would think that was fairly obvious, uh? But I guess you don't usually check the public comments on that category. :D
