This isn't a pleading exercise or complaint about some indecipherable attack but rather a question into why trolls go through all the effort of attempting to ruin someone else's day via the autonomy of the internet.
From the snipe troll who leaves a random and unintelligent public post that has nothing to do with one's story, to the residential troll who will park himself (i use himself because the trolls are usually self-identified as men) in a forum and attempt to piss off everyone in the forum. Often times they go out of their way to enter a forum of specifically antithetical viewpoints and inflict their insults to said viewpoints constantly and relentlessly when the internet offers far more options to be surrounded by like-minded individuals where he could discuss these issues more in depth instead of just royally pissing off an entire forum and revealing what a stunted moron he is.
There are also the stalker trolls who go out of their way to attack someone on the internet, attempting to destroy or derail their webpages, following them to communities they belong to and posting there, sending threatening email, etc...
Among the drive-by trolls, one could see it as merely the stupidity of the moment. A sort of a shot in the dark caused by something or another that raised your ire or something enough to reveal yourself as an idiot. That is at least in the realm of semi-understandable.
But and this is a big but, I have no idea why the professional trolls set up shop and devote themselves relentlessly to destroying the happiness of one or a group of people and the comraderie they share or to bullying someone annonymously.
That's the best I can figure out. That it's appeals to the troll mind are the same appeals as those that apply to bullying. An insecure pathetic person who instead of dealing with them internally like a sane non-sociopath decides to make others suffer for their inability to control the universe or even their own miserable lives via the magic of incompetence and fuckups. That these petty pathetic future homeowner association board members are the intermediate stage between playground bully and that homeowner association guy who has nothing better to do than invent ways to prevent kids or homeowners from enjoying themselves on the deserted paranoid streets.
But while that may explain some of their motivations, it doesn't explain their persistence or the hurdles they overcome to give someone a bad day. When I was bullied in school, I had the unfortunate problem of competent bullies who didn't just limit their campaign to mere physical violence and though they went out of their way to make me miserable, they got instant returns. They got to feel big and I didn't try to pummel them. Also their actions didn't really require much of them. Just rumours, threats, and the occasional trash canning and push-around. When a teacher finally intervened on my behalf and they dealt with real repercussions for their actions, they backed off. Just as others got bullies to back off by defeating them physically or by counter psi-ops.
The point is that once the game runs out on bullies and their shit no longer goes out without repercussions, they generally if nothing else have to change tactics and focus to easier targets.
But not trolls. Even after the community turns on them, even after they are repeatedly publicly humiliated and insulted by the people whose lives he is trying to ruin and the websites he is trying to vandalize with his presence, permanent trolls still stay on and show remarkable little change to their rhetoric or methodology. When they are increasingly ignored, they merely step up their posts and the level of offense until again they are treated to another round of mass hatred, intellectual superiority, and direct retaliatory strikes against their character.
AND STILL THEY STAY! In a community that hates them, still they attempt to stalk even after their alts have been banned and they have to change their user name constantly till their IP address is threatened to be banned. Still they stay in areas they are considered a joke, where they are universally hated, when it would be simple to get the supposed attention and more agreement and confirmation of their tiny and small philosophies of life, and sympathy for their petty sorrows somewhere else.
If it's an ego thing or a bully thing, why do they stay where they are unwelcome, a joke, received with hostility, and deliberately ignored. Why do they struggle for every last scrap of hate when it would be easier to be a bully somewhere else or they could at least move to another easier forum where they are hated and the community hasn't become numb or hostile.
What's the point of the trolling, why do they do it, what benefit does this permanent trolling serve to them? Is it simply bullying, the insecure attempt to ruin someone else's life so that you feel you have control over something at least or is it something else entirely?
