Why the Germans were ready to believe Hitler's "stab-in-the-back" lie

Because a previous regime had prepared the ground. The German Empire was the most highly militarized state in Europe and the press heavily censored. Right up to the end of WWI, the people believed they were winning it. That made it easy to believe the Army had not "really" lost it, but was betrayed by Jews and leftists on the home front.

This is an example of the same process. If you want to sell a lie, prepare the ground in advance.

Another lefty trying to call a black man who disagrees with their authoritarian politics a white supremacist and Nazi.

LOL....it's almost as funny as when you guys call Ben Shapiro a Nazi for not being dumb and historically ignorant enough to support socialism.

The color doesn't matter. Dude's laying ground for a Big Lie about the recall results. As for Shapiro, the appropriate term is not "Nazi" but simply "crank."

A similar process happened in post-invasion Iraq, though not because of any intentional deception. The Sunni, having been the dominant group in the country under the Ottoman Empire and since independence, always assumed they were the numerical majority. They could not believe the election results that returned a Shi'a majority. Today, many "real" (i.e., white) Americans cannot believe the results of any election a nonwhite or otherwise "other" candidate wins.

The Treaty of Versailles was a bad piece of diplomacy. The French insisted on 'reparations' from Germany, for the damage caused by the war. But Germany had NO money. Unlike the British and Americans who had fought the war with their capital reserves, Germany had fought by massive debts which they couldn't repay and the French demands on top meant more than Germany's complete national earnings for decades. That meant the debt burden could never reduce.

The result was the hyperinflation of the early 1920s. The German money became worthless. Whereas a mark could have bought a loaf of bread, a wheelbarrow full of notes was needed later and that wheelbarrow full would be worthless tomorrow. That wiped out middle-class savings. Anything must be better and Hitler promised work and reasonable pay...

True, the Dolchstosslegende was only one small part of the Nazi Party's public appeal. But the other parts are not relevant now.

The grounds were laid long before Elder decided to run. California politics and elections are already corrupt. It's a one party state and they'll cheat to keep it that way. Biden is more worried about this than he he is Americans being butchered in Afghanistan. The deck is already stacked.

Notice how quickly his supporters pivoted to race. Larry is a victim! A VICTIM, DAMMIT!

And you know that how?

Have you ever watched Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will?

https://youtu.be/Qgzm2Vhhq28

Yes. It's a curious thing. At one point, Streicher mentions the need for a nation to maintain its "racial purity." Apart from that oblique reference there is no mention anywhere of the Jews, nor Communists, nor any enemies of the Reich real or imagined. And, despite all the marching men in uniform and displays of military hardware, there is no mention at all of a coming war.

In one scene Hitler addresses a stadium full of Hitler Youth -- all those handsome clean-cut boys in their cute little Brownshirt Boy Scout uniforms -- and I'm thinking, this is 1934 -- the war starts in '39 and lasts until '45 -- all of these boys will be going into the armed forces at some point -- how many, I wonder, will still be alive in '45?

The Triumph of the Will was one of the most effective bits of propaganda at which the Nazis were the best exponents before 1939.

The difference between the hyperinflation of the 1920s and the full employment provided by the Nazis lulled many people into accepting that Hitler was a force for good in Germany - until too late.

And yes, many of those 1934 Hilter Youth fought and died in WW2 - as did British Scouts of the same time. The notorious Oxford Debate about whether we would fight for King and Country was an anomaly. It was just a debate and those against won the argument but most of those present, for or against, fought in WW2.

Never heard of that debate. But I have read several articles by George Orwell giving the impression that pacifism was a big deal in Britain at the time. In Orwell's view, most pacifists were simply humanitarians who objected to taking life and preferred not to follow their thoughts beyond that point -- but some were active Nazi sympathizers, and there was even some small overlap in membership between the Peace Pledge Union and Mosley's Blackshirts.

You should be more respectful of your intellectual betters.

My wife's uncle, a Quaker, was a pacifist at the start of WW2 and was arrested for it but he volunteered to become a corpsman, retrieving wounded from the battlefield. After seeing Nazi attacks on civilians in France in 1940 he changed his mind and became an officer and tank commander. He was killed at the battles in Italy to cross the River Po.

His brothers didn't share his views. One was a Commando killed at Walcheren. The other served with the Gurkhas in the Burma campaign and was wounded at Kohima.

But in the USA there was a considerable anti-war party determined not to get involved in foreign wars. That affected US policy until Pearl Harbor when the peace-lovers and pro-Germans changed their minds.

Even Gandhi was willing to do that, in the Boer War.

Or were suppressed.

Funny, though, how all the Japanese in California got interned to prevent them from sabotage, but the German-American Bundists weren't. Their organization was suppressed but the members were left free.

That was a big mistake by the US government, and we in the UK did that to Jewish refugees from Hitler, sending them to the Isle of Man - a complete waste of resources.

Years ago I found some Nazi papers belonging to a Royal Navy officer who was a senior member of Mosley's Blackshirts and serving on the battleship Prince of Wales. Immediately after the declaration of war, he was arrested so was not on the Prince of Wales when it was sunk by the Bismarck. He wasn't released until 1949. The papers were hidden in a hollowed-out book in his extensive library. If they had been found at the time? He might have been shot.

At least you sent them someplace Hitler couldn't get at them. Many Jews who tried to get into the U.S. were sent back and died.

We in the UK took many thousands including the Kindertransport. But if we had known what Hitler would do? We would have taken many more but by 1938 travel restrictions on adult Jews in Greater Germany, including Austria, meant that the flow slowed to a trickle.

Skape-goating is an age old tactic and it also helps when inflation and poverty is running rampant to convince folks that Jews and Liberals are the source of the problem (the big lie)...45 did the very same thing.
