Why so many views and votes?

I was looking through the "Top Lists" section the other day and noticed some stories that have over 1000 votes. The highest I found was over 3000 votes! My highest vote-getter has just over 100 votes and it is almost a year old. Is this just a function of getting so many views? If so, is there more to that than just submitting lousy incest stories with titles that begin with "A"? (A lot of the most read stories are incest stories and/or start with an A).

I also noticed that many of the "most read" stories had very low voter ratings. Very strange. It seems that many love to read them, then vote as if they hate them. Can someone explain the seeming dichotomy?

Excuse me if this has been answered many times in the past, I haven't been visiting this forum very long.

Here's a theory. The storiies have a titillating title and/or description, which makes them easily picked. Then the content don't live up to the "wrapping", and people vote it down out of dissapointment.

You may be right, I had only considered the titles (not the descriptions) and many of them are not tittililating at all ('A' My Name is Alice, The Dream, etc.).

But I still there has to be more there than meets the eye, like some kind of outside means of getting hits to the story, maybe.

I think people click on the 'most read' simply because they are the most read, wondering why - then they read them and are often disappointed. I was.

You have to remember that there is no way of counting
how many times a story has been read by a person. What
they do count is hte number of times that the story has
been DOWNLOADED. I get download reports on all the files
on my website at ASSTR. Almost always, the most downloaded
files are the style sheets. These aren't read by humans,
except when I'm checking my own.
I have two stories on my site at asstr which are continued
stories (and another on Lit). The numbers of downloads
are reported separately. They aren't the same.
I doubt that many people read to the end of part 1 and then
don't click over to part 2.

'A' My Name is Alice is the most viewed because it used to be the first story that came up due to Lit pulling them up alphabetically. It wasn't very good . . .so not many votes.

Incest stories generally garner a large amount of views and votes. It is almost enough to make me break down and write one.

Yes, that's what I thought. So it just goes on and on, the same lousy stories will be the most ready forever because they are incest stories that are old and start with an "A".

My suggestion is that they get rid of the most viewed as it is now and post most viewed today, this week, this month and this year. Then we will have a better idea of what is popular, not this ridiculous and embarrassing list. But then again, the new list might be just as ridiculous, who knows?

Thanks to all for the comments so far.

In defense of my How-To Story about . . .

Anal Sex - lol - it had to start with 'A'!!!

I do agree that clever or slutty titles tend to catch a reader's eye. In fact, I've often thought of going back and renaming the first three stories I submitted. I think the titles are 'boring' so they don't get as many reads as I believe they should. (Then I think, why put Laurel through that? The stories would have to be moved, things adjusted - just forget it!)

Reads and Votes - it's just a game. It is possible to build up a solid reader base, but that takes time and lots of effort (and lots of people with lots of time to surf porn sites).

I believe that generally the better stories rise to the top and stay there.

I hope.

;)

It's easy to suggest, everybody here does, but...

Nice suggestion, but unless the owners want to do it it won't be done. This isn't a democracy, it's a business.

PS: All of my titles have the word Slut in them somewhere.

I agree sweetsubsarahh, that slutty and clever titles do catch the readers eye. Along with a provocative picture up also. Just look at you and dirty sluts pictures for example. Most guys would run to read your story instantly based on the way you gals look. I hate to say it that way but it is true. if you think I am wrong just look in the mirror nude with those super bods you got. (I am sure you two do this alot anyway)you will see that I am right. Nuff said!:)

Reader wants your feedback about feedback

>>I realized I was serious about this, so I deleted and started a thread to get your feedback about feedback. <<

Well, the "A" getting more reads will start to decline. Literotica has a new method of 'opening' the stories under one group, rotating the first page displayed. I cannot remember if it is changed daily or weekly, but each page of a list will have it's own turn as being the 'opening' page. Obviously this does not apply to the most reads list, but over time it could affect what is on there.

As for SheReads list of questions, I disagree with your premise that feedback is interrupting an author. I don't have much time for writing, but when I do I try to ONLY write. And the nice thing about emailed feedback is that it sits patiently waiting for when I want to read it.

I am easy, admitted, so nice comments and high votes are ALWAYS welcome. But the feedback I save are the comments that add something to my work. Whether it is an observation or emotion that suprised me because it was NOT what I was trying to do, or a detailed review of use of words and structure, it is these kinds of comments that help improve what is only a hobby. But like any hobbyist, I want to do the little I do as well as I can.

As far as votes and reads go, I've noticed that most activity happens when a story is new. And there is a modest (VERY modest) spillover to previous stories. My own conclusion is that authors that write and post regularly will end up with more reads as their name is more often on the 'new' lists.

In terms of satisfaction, it remains for me in order of importance: 1) Finishing something I started to my satisfaction that I am prepared to submit it. 2) Not having typos or misspellings slip through. 3) A reader that writes back and tells me the story produced an emotional response. If the response is simply a sexual one, that's quite ok, that is what the site is centered on. If it's more, that's good, too.

I've been fortunate with the voting so far, but have certainly seen the 'troll effect'. I made it to the top of a couple of lists once and learned what that really means. I'm grateful that Laurel does do a little 'handicapping', THANK YOU. But it's the feedback that matters in the end.

So, SR, if you have some thoughts, I would encourage you to send them along. It might be too much of a 'busman's holiday' for you, and I understand. After all, you are here escaping work like most of the rest of us.

Yes I am quite aware of that, Dirty Slut (I kind of enjoy writing that!). But why would the owners want the current messed up system? It's a screwed up mess that they have attempted to fix but have failed. Starting over or changing it would be better, I think.

Just using what God gave me is all.

Indeed, I'm sure we do. LOL As to why men run to read our stories, I think someone said on another thread that it was just good PR on our parts. Truth be told, does it really matter how we get people to read our stories, as long as they get read? If the stories weren't any good they wouldn't keep coming back for more, would they?

The problems with view counts is that it doesn't take into account the people who backed out after reading the first paragraph because it was so badly written.

I think I am a little slower than other people here in understanding my computer but what process do you use when you print your story on the bulletin board and you have other people just click on it to get to your stories? for example- Dirt man's holiday stories -and you just click onto it. and then the person who clicks on it is right at his stories.how do you do this?. I am not really sure?:)

It's code. We are using the tag. For example: If you wanted i...t replace the () with [] and you are all set.
