I was called a "bigot" today for pointing out that something is odd about the fact that roughly one third of people in TV commercials are black when only 13% of the population is black. I believe if there is any "bigotry" involved here, its the over-representation of a group and the under-representation of other groups. When blacks used to be under-represented, black leaders complained, so how is it "bigotry" for other groups to complain when they are now under-represented?

It also raises the question, who is deciding the casting for advertising and why? What's especially interesting is that even though not all blacks are identifiable by their speech, even audio advertising has a large percentage of voices that are identifiable as black by their way of speaking, almost like they are putting it on stronger than normal for the ad. Why?

The commercials are aimed at notorious fools and their money.

I'm surprised more people don't complain about Flo in those Progressive Insurance commercials.
She's really black but they colorize her to make her appear to be white.

Other groups are pissed about underrepresentation. There's actually a movement called "Representation Matters" that addresses it. But fun fact: It's not black folk taking the spots in most cases. However, black male actors, in particular, have been targeted for over-representation recently. But not so they can give up their spot to white folk. You can google "Representation Matters" to see how people who are better qualified than you are already addressing this issue.

How do they expect me to watch this goddamn football game? There are barely any whites at all!

I can't speak for the NFL, but I read on the Internet that white first-graders are tested for jumping ability. The top 2 percent are hustled away to secret camps, given drugs to turn them black, then trained to play basketball.
So while you're watching the NBA and you see those incredible black athletes soar through the air, chances are those guys are really white.
Think about it. Can you think of a whiter name than Michael Jordan?

Drugs? Wouldn't it be easier to just lock them in tanning booths?

Or wait... that just turns them into New Jersey reality show trash. Nevermind. Terrible idea.

I don't know if this thread is for real or not, but I believe most white people don't care one way or another about the race of the man walking into the dealership and buying a new car. However, I also believe many black people get almost paranoid about what they see as underrepresentation and advertisers don't want to lose those potential sales. This was an attitude about fifty years ago and the pendulum has swung the other way.

Interracial couples are still not very common in advertising spots but they eventually will be.

You must be bored, sitting around counting how many negroes are in tv commercials. Is that what you are doing?

Damn, that's sad.

Nigger counting is America's hottest career. Most companies hire a nigger counter before they hire a book keeper or receptionist.

Bob: "How do we make this ad appeal to all of the target audience?"

Steve: "I know! We use actors they can identify with!"

Bob: "Great! So, white guys, black guys, latino guys, asian guys, arab guys..."

Steve: "...don't forget women..."

Bob: "...yeahyeahyeah, women of course. And all religions, like, a muslim chick in a whassammacallit, headscarf thing, a jew in a yarmulke, mormons, wait, what the fuck does mormons wear?"

Steve: "Shit son, this is gonna be the most diverse ad ever!"

Fred: "Guys, guys, GUYS! You know the script says three people, right? And that's the budget we have for actors, right?"

Steve: "...oh... right."

Bob: "Rrriiight..."

Steve: "Soo... white guy, black guy, woman?"

Bob: "What kind of woman? I mean, you said white guy, black guy..."

Steve: "I dunno... white, I guess? Most women in the target demo are white."

Bob: "All right, I'll call the caster."

Steve: "Great meeting guys! We're really hitting the nail on this diversity thing, aren't we?"

So, white people=cool, black people=paranoid. Got it.

To show diversity, to connect with different audiences, so we don't live in a white supremacist society.

Still with your nigger shit I see.

I use words that do the work...nigger counter, nigger lip, nigger heaven etc. My daughter sometimes calls her husband a GODDAMNED NIGGER. I just started using ZEBRA in my stories. Avoid my story UHURU CHRISTMAS if youre fragile and delicate.

Good luck finding any colored society with a history of superlative performance. The Egyptians are prolly it. Theyre impressive.

You were called a bigot because you're a fucking bigot.

Now go cuddle with JamesBRacist and dream of whiter days.

Fred: Shouldn't we just hire the best actors? I mean we have a pretty diverse pool of applicants, there's no reason to specifically list certain races on the casting call. I mean, our target demographic has mixed race folks and a huge variety of ethnicities; it isn't like we really need to make sure we've got a white guy or whatever.

Steve: Didn't we fire Fred?

Bob: I thought you meant Asian Fred.

There is a federal program that funds casting black actors so that they can afford to date more white women. Weren't you paying attention? It was, like, Obama's first executive order.

BIGOT has nuthin to do with racism, ass apple. A BIGOT is a critic who throws Scripture at you to justify his argument opposing your immoral conduct. Youre a fucking dunce.

This thread actually made me think of something tho. Some country, Sweden or one of those Scandinavian countries, I think, is super racist. So in one of my advertising classes we were learning about cultural localization and everybody was making fun of them because they actually hire people to photoshop all their advertisement actors white. And I remember one was extra bad because they just switched the faces so we were like, "No but it's ok if his hands are still black." I'm going to try to find it.

This isn't the one I was thinking of but it's a similar premise.

Okay Mr. BIGot...

;)

It plays well with a lot of demographics, the emerging black middle class, Democrat voters, academics who stray from NPR and anyone who is supposed to be tolerant enough of diversity to not be noticing the color of people, but it strikes me even now, all those commercials about being too fat are completely black actor free, like the security commercials where every bad guy is clearly white.

:D
