Fuck critique of fellow word smiths what aspects of word play rub you wrong?

A partial list:
  1. Singsong rhymed verse.
  2. Singsong rhymed verse when the author can't get the meter right and forces the rhyme. This is even worse than 1.
  3. As Champ said, trite imagery. Especially in "erotic" poetry.
  4. Again, as Champ said, bad spelling. And bad grammar.
  5. Cutesy punctuation, such as an overuse of ellipses. My personal pet peeve is the tilde ('~') character. I have come to hate that one. (Sorry, those of you use it. As I said, pet peeve.) :)
I have been guilty of all of the above, except maybe using the tilde. I may even have used that, but if I have I don't remember. I overuse the dash, I know.

Though it does not necessarily indicate bad poetry, I hate for someone to say something like "feelings just well up inside of me and spill out as poetry." That always strikes me as equivalent to saying "I write emotional mush."

That doesn't mean I think emotion has no place in poetry, nor that I think poetry written to express strongly held personal feelings is bad. But to me good writing is a product of both heart and head.

Sometimes it just takes too long to find the right word to fit the feeling.

I used to work at Borders and spent a tiny bit of time in the cafe there as a backup barista...I had a double shot americano every day and funny enough, never had a headache while working there. :cathappy:

"poetic moments" I have enough of my own ~thank you.
I love the tilde and forced rime as long if there are no poetic moments involved.
I don't mind "writing from the heart" if I see blood spilled. :)
But really isn't your question is self annihilating, is it poetry if there is no word play. If something unexpected doesn't happen. Or is it just cliched lines from a logorrheic mind?

I must go now and waltz ma tilde
