I always thought a fetish was the attraction to something that is considered abnormal by the majority of society. Fetish isn't necessarily abnormal, it is putting an abnormal degree to that particular thing...for example...

From my limited knowledge I thought the fetishism part is more when people are into extreme obesity and encouraging their partner to overeat and become more obese to the point of immobility sometimes.

Just being attracted to BBW women in general is not fetishism from what I've read, and this makes logical sense... although I'm sure you can find examples of people saying otherwise in this age of misinformation.

Being a BBW myself (and I truly consider myself an SSBBW, i.e. I'm very FAT!), I'm not personally offended that I'd be lumped into a fetish for guys that dig women my size. But I do agree with BBCfan when he says "being attracted to BBW women in general is not fetishism."

I think it gets lumped into being a fetish because being fat and/or morbidly obese isn't socially acceptable. Yes, curvy women are now looked upon as being sexy and are featured on magazine covers, porn, etc. But as you go up the scale (pun intended) to BBW and SSBBW, the acceptance drops. People look down on you, casting disapproving glances at you when you're out in public. I know this because I've gotten those looks. They see you as a slovenly individual who obviously has no self-control. So I think it's looked upon as an abnormality if a guy gets a hardon for a pic of a naked woman who weighs twice as much as he does and could smother him with no problem if she sat on his face!

And it's the same for men. The "dad bod" is now the thing. It's considered cool and it's accepted. But you add another 50=100 to that guy and suddenly he's not so cool anymore. But there are women who are attracted to very large men as well. So that's probably also considered a "fetish" even though technically it probably isn't.

That's my two cents worth.

EDIT - An additional thought I had: the attraction someone has towards a BBW would probably be considered a sexually taboo thing. Taboo is defined as "a prohibition imposed by social custom or as a protective measure." However, the word "taboo" is now almost always associated with "incest" when referred to in a sexual context. Maybe there should be some new category for niche interests like this. It's certainly worth pondering.

A "thing" becomes a fetish only when that "thing" becomes a primary need for the person obsessed. BBW is simply a slang for beautiful larger women. So BBW isn't a fetish in and of itself — it only becomes a fetish for certain people.

Same with any fetish — take feet for example. We all have feet (well most of us) but we don't all have a fetish for feet.

A fetish is all in the head of the one obsessed with a specific "thing" and has virtually nothing to do with the object of their fetish.
