There are several possible reasons although MY pet theory is that most of them are the result of greed. There are cash prizes for the highest scoring stories each month, and it's mostly those elgible for a prize that get slammed the worst.

The older stories tend to not get oned as much as the new ones do -- partly because the total number of votes make it more difficult to change the ranking with a single vote, and partly because they're not in contention for any prize money.

Some of the one votes are malicious votes directed at a specific author, and some are disappointment in a high ranked story because it didn't measure up to it's popularity.

I agree

Weird Harold is right on, I think. Consider it. There are writers who crave popularity, and will try to get their story to reside amoung the best of the best. When other stories come along the list, they slam them to push them down, keeping their's up. The problem is, of course, several people doing this. Then everyone's story gets slammed. Of course, a good story will continue to get good votes, and as votes accumulate, the voting average is affected less.

Anyway, this reminds me, there was discussion some time back of raising the vote minimum from 10 to 25, which would help the stories from getting slammed. Did Laurel & Co. establish this, or is this in limbo?
