Why is it ok to call folks STUPID, but if you call them FAT all hell breaks loose?

Plus, there isn't an ideal "not stupid", but we are assualted regularly with ideas about fat and not fat.

I saw a 12 year girl at the supermarket obsess about fat grams. With bricks in her pocket she couldn't have weighed more than 65 lbs.

Oh no, that's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying that when someone calls me stupid, I shrug it off - because I honestly don't think I am stupid, even though there are many indications to the contrary. However, when someone calls me fat, even though I'm not overweight, it bothers me for a second.

I'm sure there are people who are insecure about their intelligence and thus might feel hurt when called "stupid". However, I think that most people do not consider themselves to BE stupid. I think people are more insecure about their looks than they are about their intelligence. Strange, but true.

I'm not justifying any insults - be it "stupid" or "fat". I'm just trying to explain why I think they're taken differently.

It's not okay to call anyone fat or stupid. However, I understand the point of the question and I agree with Laurel. Stupid is relative... and most people believe that they're not stupid. Intelligence is not a tangible characteristic, you can't judge someone's intelligence by their looks, but you can certainly figure out if someone is heavy just by looking at them. Most women are sensitive about their self-image and so if someone calls them fat, it just confirms all those insecurities that they have... that we all have. It's not accurate, but we feel them anyway.

Okay, now I feel stupid because I don't think I made sense. Oh well. *sigh*
