Times change. The 1980-2015 Republican Party, from Reagan to Romney, was nothing like the pre-1980 Republican Party. The Republican Party was also different when Robert La Follette Sr. and Theodore Roosevelt were in the party, especially prior to the big 1912 schism. The Republican Party was even more so different in the time of Abraham Lincoln, Thaddeus Stevens and Ulysses S. Grant. In the 1860s, the Republican Party, especially its Radical Republican wing, was a revolutionary party of progress.

They quickly see ex-allies (such as "Hang Mike Pence") as traitors.
