Oh, Lord, what a topic. My two cents. Incest is wrong because society believes it's wrong. Concentual incest between adults? We're not talking about raping babies here. Nor are we discussing raising an inbred family. (I hope, at least.) The laws are there to prevent genetic problems, not to decide the morality of fucking your adult sister.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of victims of incest in the world, those who were too young to make the choice themselves. This tends to color the perception of incest. The picture of dirty old men oogling their daughter, or worse, comes to mind when the word is mentioned.
I try not to judge people for their perversities. I have too many glass windows on my house to be tossing stones at other people. As long as its concentual and all participants are of age, I have no business telling them they're going to Hell. Let the church do it, not a bunch of people on a sex story site.

Tens of thousands of years ago(or a few 100 years ago, for here in America), humanity was completely tribal, we evolved this way, and so far it's proven to be the best form of social organization for humans, but that's another discussion...
Anyway, we're all tribal, and basically live in family groups. We identify ourselves by our family members. And by marrying into another family, you increase your realm of power, protection, ability to call favors, etc., etc. But, marrying and mating with a blood-relative is looked down upon, because it doesn't increase your sphere of benefits(protection, power, yaddayaddayadda). This is seen as very bad. Why? Suppose you get in a fight with a neighboring family group, but they have more people than your family does? You can call upon you in-laws, and they are obliged to help you(because if they help you, you're obliged to help them, and it goes on in a cycle of give and take). Or if your setting up a big hunt, and don't have enough people, you can call upon your in-laws(this scenario is doubly advantageous for your in-laws, because it means slightly increased food as well...). But if you marry your sister, or your 1st or 2nd cousin, or your aunt, you don't bring in any more people to the extended family group.
Now, nowadays, we know all about how genetically bad it can be if incest is followed for several generations because of recessed genes and all, but this is where the BIG taboo on incest comes from. It's not biological, it's not religious, it's quite simply: POLITICAL. Marrying or mating among your blood relatives simply does not help the family group, and on a larger level the tribe, as a whole.
Now, I myself entertain incest fantasies, that's why this post does not contain any flaming. But, I would also not do it 1) without consent from the family member or if they didn't feel the same way about me, and 2) because I don't have anyone in my family that I'm /actually/ attracted to. But, I'm just rambling now.

But it still exists! In spite of all the religious bans, the legal prohibitions brothers and sisters still experiment. When I was ten, one of my frends(a family with 5 children, 4 girls/1boy) and two of his sisters played around together.
This was not uncomon as I knew of several other families that were much the same.

you might also think about basic family terminology:
to wit: more than a few social theorists believe that terms like "mother," "father," "brother," and "sister," (which come from the very ancient Indo-European terms "mater," "pater," "bhrater," and "swesor") derive out of a need to isolate the nuclear family from the sexual freedom that proper names allow.
look at it this way: the phrase, "Having sex with Mom" has one connotation. The phrase, "Having sex with Joanne" has a different social connotation. The relationship-names serve as a barrier to incest, which was deemed taboo for the reasons outlined by Eggy-O and company.

There are some very interesting posts here on incest. It looks as though we have the view of "common decent folks", "The Church", and even some political views.
I myself have not participated in incest, but I have to admit that stories about incest really turn me on. Maybe because it's taboo. Some people are turned on by scat and urine,same sex relationships,BDSM, or whatever else they can dream up. To each his or her own!
I guess the bottom line would be: If it offends you, don't "go there."
There are plenty of other fine stories on this great site for you to read if you don't like the ones about incest.

Most people's responses to incestuous situations is "ooh, icky" (at least, that's their public response, anyhow). If two people over the age of 18 who happen to be related want to marry, they should be allowed to do so. Period. It's their business - not yours, not mine. Now I'd like to hear from anyone that REALLY was either an incest victim or someone who was at first a victim, then began to enjoy it, or not mind doing it. To stop abnormal pregnancies because there was no birth control
the British introduced a new law that stated relations between
close family members was against the law, This became law in 1908...........yes just 93 years ago!!! Then and only then did other countries follow suit. Well since we now have birth control devices
untold I think it's time this law was now repealed,
I am 28 y/o woman and have been in an incestuous relationship with my brother and my mother for the last 7 years, we do not think it's wrong and neither do we feel any guilt about it. How do you feel guilty about love? For we love each other and we have found many more families even whole communities who indulge in incest relationships..........Where I here you ask are these commuities? I'll tell where............... right here in the good old US of A and there of hundreds if not thousands of these communites
all over the states, La. Tx. Az. Wv. Fl. Nv.Ca. every state. When you think of the atrocities that occurred in NY and WA and PA.
Does incest deserve to be put in the same class as that?? We don't hurt anyone no one is forced to submit, everything happens, happens within a loving enviroment. Do think it right that people who harm no one can be gaoled for life for loving someone who loves them very dearly.
I truly feel the laws on incest should be reviewed and all cases brought to trial should be dealt with in a more humane manner. True I don't think children should start into a relationship until they are adult, then again I have met a family in the Ozarks who have three daughters all under 15 y/o who each has two children by their father and their brother

Incidently it is legal to marry your cousin in the UK.
