Why Do We All Seem To Cling To One Another?

The conformity/individuality thing has been an issue that has haunted me all my life.

Intellectually, I'm content to believe that conformity & the desire to "belong" are weaknesses that ought to be expunged from one's character.

But emotionally, I've found that the desire to "belong" seems irrepressible.

Why is that?

We're herd animals.

Civilization cannot burn out all animal instinct.

One doesn't have to be exactly like everyone else to be accepted. The problem lies in that not everyone understands this.

I've often thought about this. If you watch one of those National Geographic specials about apes, you'll see them sitting around in circles, grooming each other's hair... and then every once in a while a fight breaks out, and the biggest baddest monkey beats up on a little one while everyone else stands around hooting and waving their arms...

Disgusting.

On the other hand, there's really nothing better than having someone play with your hair.

Especially if they are wrapped in Saran Wrap.

You're trying to save me from myself, aren't you, *bratcat*?

Thank you.

Will you play with my hair please?

I'll wrap myself in saran wrap if you want...

Our social structures are far more complicated.

Though, I'd rather be a Bonobo if I had to be a fuzzy critter.

"Bonobos have been described as “pansexual” by psychologist Frans de Waal. Sex permeates the fabric of bonobo society, weaving through all aspects of daily life. It serves an important function in keeping the society together, maintaining peaceful, cooperative relations. Besides heterosexual contact, both male and female bonobos engage in same-sex encounters, and even group sex occurs. Female-female contact, or “GG-rubbing,” is actually the most common. Unlike other apes, bonobos frequently copulate face-to-face, looking into each others eyes. When bonobo groups meet in the forest, they greet each other, bond sexually, and share food instead of fighting. Likewise, almost any conflict between bonobos is eased by sexual activity, grooming, or sharing food. "

My kind of ape.

KM: sometimes civilization seems more like an elaboration of animal instinct than an attempt to burn it out.

sometimes also though people need to be alone away from everyone even the people they love

My kind of ape.

Chimps, on the other hand, are more aggressive.

Some peeps have speculated there's a correlation between the relative difference in size between males and females of a species and the levels of violence and sexual possessiveness seen within communities...

People are somewhere between chimps and bonobos on this scale.

Post ed. b/c I fucked it up.

...not everyone understands this...

How many people understand this? Sometimes I'm not sure even I understand it.

"Disgusting."

It's not too bad if you're the big monkey.

Try some fabric softener.

I've found fabric hardener to be more effective.
