Why do scores change even when the voting numbers don't?

I'm new to this game but like all the authors I look at my stories scores. I've noticed these can be fairly erratic even when the number of voters doesn't change. Why is this? I don't even know if I'm asking in the right place!

I still think the whole concept is great!

Hi Bill. Welcome to Lit from a fellow noobie. You should put a link to your stories on your post so we don't have to search.

They are updated at different times.

You can have votes with no views when a story is new.

Sometimes, duplicate votes and unfair votes are swept away. If, for example you have 10 votes and a rating of 4.00, next time you look you might still have 10 votes and a rating of 4.50 because a duplicate (lower) vote has been removed.

The most likely thing you're noticing are votes coming in, while your views don't change. On your author page, your votes update immediately when cast. Views, on the other hand, only update a few times a day.

With a contest going on, sweeps are more frequent. Odds are, you're seeing where someone has cast a vote previously, and it gets swept ( erased ). Since you last looked, someone else has voted on your story. You have the same number of votes, but a different score.
