I believe it has something to do with all those coca leaves in the jungle.

Actually I would venture to guess that it has, over time, taken on being a marker for other Gorillas. Being so dark colored and primarily covered in fur, whatever charecteristics would differentiate one gorilla from the next would tend to get somewhat personalized over evolutionary time. As well as possible virulity'fertility signs. Just lobbing a guess, as this scenario is responsible for other similar occurences in nature.
