Why do comments take a long time to appear?

How long does it take for a comment to appear on a story?
I would make a comment and I notice it takes several hours to see it appear.
I met others who noticed the same thing.

There's a batch screening process that was first put in place a few years ago to stop a spam attack that inundated the site for 2-3 weeks.

Unfortunately, it slowed the whole comments process down, and it now seems to be much slower than it was. Hopefully the site is getting a fix in place, coz it's killing one of the better feedback mechanisms authors had.

I guess that makes sense. I guess it's worth the wait if it means you're not seeing spam posts everywhere.

Different parts of the site update at different speeds - if I look at a new story of mine I may see there's comments on it, long before my Works summary tells me I have comments. Or vice versa which is mildly annoying as I know I have a comment but can't read it until hours later. Numbers of views, votes and scores can also vary wildly depending on which page you view.

I reckon it's worth what I pay for it.

As mentioned, there was a period a few years ago where bots were spamming the comments.

Once in a while, more recently, I've gotten spam from the Lit Feedback system. The comments on stories don't have spam though.

They're being censored because this is no longer a free speech site.

And your proof is? I love a good conspiracy as well as the next guy but this makes absolutely no sense. What are they "censoring" that would be in comments to individual authors?

Agree. How can anyone know what is allegedly being "censored" unless they see every comment, and every comment "not published". Belief without proof is a religion, not demonstrable fact.
