Why do bad movies get a bad rap?

Laurel's thread made me think of this. Sure, LOTS movies are just FRIGHTENLY bad,(Plan 9,) but, some are just fun. Why do you think MST 3000 is so popular? Because, audiences can laugh at the absurdity of it all. People watch slasher movies KNOWING there gonna be stupid.

I think there is a difference between a movie that is laughably bad and that you can watch with your mates and joke about (I mean, what is MST 3000 if not that?) and movies that just flat out suck.

There is an agreement betweena film and a viewer. Maybe the film pulls you somewhere you havnt been, maybe it excites you, maybe it harkens to a set of feelings you once had... etc...etc. It asks for your time and attention and is obliged to give you something back. Sometimes a film offers a great deal, sometimes its just some entertainment.

A 'bad' movie is one that disregards this agreement.

Any movie could be mocked on MST3K. It's just easier and more fun to skewer the bad ones.

MY 3 favorite episodes of MST3K:

I Accuse My Parents (with the short "Truck Farmer")
The Day the Earth Froze
Mitchell
