I'll admit that for me there was never a temptation to smoke. It bothered my sinuses and I just thought it smelled awful, and none of my friends in HS smoked.

But I know that some of the more intelligent people of Lit are nicotine addicts. I just wonder how you got started?

Was it peer pressure? You didn't pay attention in health class and didn't actually KNOW it was bad for you?

Share with me...

I started smoking in 6th grade, I have no idea why. I love smoking, and yes, I know it's bad for me. Lots of things are bad for me.

I occasionally think about quitting, and I have quit off and on over the years, and maybe I'll actually do it one of these days... but I enjoy it for more than the nicotene.

Peer pressure all the way. When I moved to a whole different area in sixth grade, I only made one real group of friends. The kids in my neighborhood.

I went straight from Miss Goodytwoshoes (thank God I had that changed! :D ) to the crowd that actually said boner, and knew all about shoplifting.

They blew smoke in my face, they teased me, they made me feel like a baby for not doing it. What was I to do? I was just trying to fit in.

Looking back, of course I see these people really weren't healthy for me. But I didn't see that then.

I voted rebellion, but peer pressure had a part in it too. If I only knew now what I should have known then!!! I knew the health risks, but figured that I could quite any time. That was 16+ years ago. I have tried, even just recently, to quit and it is very very very difficult.

Originally it was peer pressure and then as you go through in life , I smoke for different reasons. I had given up for 4 years and went through a particularly stressfull time and when straight back on it .

Now it is when drinking, after a meal, stress, after sex ( particularly nice ) !!

Anyway I am giving up this weekend

I really didn't know it was bad for me...

I have smoked for years on and off...

and my quits never last very long...

Stress and relaxation

I started smoking in High School. I'd sneak an occasional cigarette here and there but it lost it's luster after awhile. When I would get stressed I would buy a pack and smoke about 1/2 the pack and throw it away. This was about every six months or so in my mid late twenties.

Until about 8 months ago. Marriage ploblems, work problems, and all my new friends where I sing karaoke smoked so I started up again. Everytime I go to quit, some new POS is dropped on me.

Now, I've got a 1/2 to 1 pack a day habit that I have to still hide from my wife. Good thing we are sleeping in different beds at this point. Can't afford to move out. :(

I smoke a maximum of 3 cigs a year. ONLY when I'm really fucked up from drinking.

I think I started smoking because all my friends in High School were. I didn't feel it was peer pressure. I just got tired of walking a 1/2 a mile from campus everyday on breaks so they could smoke. So finally, I asked for a smoke to try it out. I wasn't at all impressed and coughed my ass off. Then one day I was stressing out over something and found myself craving a cigarette. That was all she wrote. Been smoking ever since. Have quit several times, even just recently. But, we won't talk about how that is going.

For me it was peer pressure, all my friends smoked and at the time it felt like the thing to do. I can quite honestly say however that if I had my time over again I wouldn't smoke.

curiosity and a toutch of rebellion at the age of 13

been smoking a decade now wish i never started

Smoking is the only vice I didn't acquire. I used to smoke a little, when drinking, but never got addicted....thank god. Both my parents smoked and my wife smoked 2 packs a day (she has since quit). I have friends who smoke when they drink and I really don't understand it. Granted drinking does make you want to light up, but I just don't see it as being worth the risk of getting addicted. Smoking is not nearly as fun as being an alcoholic...I've got that down pat!

I smoked because they told me I couldn't. I quit because they told me I couldn't. Is that rebellion or just me being a dumbass? Nevermind, I know the answer.

No, believe me I drink more than 3 times a year. But I rarely smoke, was my point. Unfortuantely, I always remember what happens when I'm fucked up.

I started smoking because everybody I knew smoked. And I mean everybody. I guess you could say I started smoking before I was born, since both my parents were smokers at the time.

Maybe I ought to sue the bastards.

the first time I smoked a cigarette was the first time I smoked pot. I was told it would prolong the high. I kept smoking, because I drank, and then I smoked because it would relax me.

I don't smoke anymore.

*hacking*

You forgot the "becouse it looks cool" option.

as bad as it is for you smoking is sexy.

Rebel rebel

"Rebellion - I wanted to fit in with the "bad" crowd or I wanted to do something I was not supposed to do"

Yup, and don't forget the lovely effects it has on your skin and voice.

:D

I started smoking young... and it was because this girl threatened to beat me up if I didnt smoke with her. I was terrified she would kill me... almost 20 years later... I realized I shoulda just let her beat me up.

Never smoked anything legal.Spending a few nights at a bar gives me enough second-hand smoke to last the week.Never appealed to me.
